Description
An East German, migrant view of Saxony before and after 1989. A committed life, led with unwavering humanity. And an autobiography of an activist life in times of xenophobia and racism.
The fascinating story of Hussein Jinah from Gujarat / India who was born on a British steamer, grew up in Tanzania and South Africa and came to the GDR as a guest student in the 1980s to study.
He tells how relationships between "foreigners" and native women were badly regarded. Why he changed from electrical engineering to social pedagogy after 1989 despite completing his doctorate. How he has since worked as a street worker with young people and also mediated between neo-Nazis and kebab shop owners. How he was beaten up by skins and became the first anti-Pegida demonstrator. How, in his opinion, prejudices against Muslims and in general against being different hardened after 9/11.
Why he still stays in Dresden, lives and works and can still say calmly and convincingly: "I never give up."

Reviews
"An important book."
Jens Uthoff, die tageszeitung
"It is the first description by a student with foreign roots of his life in the GDR and succinctly but accurately records the narrow-mindedness and hostility he encountered. What I suspected up to now, I get described here. And the crazy thing is: I passed the draughty barracks where the German courses for foreign students took place by bus (line 31,) every day when I went to school. That was in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Origin and future seem to be close together".
Jan Kuhlbrodt, Piqd / Literatenfunk
"Read this!"

"In his new book he tells how he came to the GDR as a student, passing border guards with Kalashnikovs. How fellow students called a girlfriend a 'foreigner bitch' even before the fall of the Wall. How window panes shattered at kebab stands during the 2008 European Football Championship. And why he stayed anyway."
Isabel Metzger, Spiegel Online
