When it comes to professional attire, people first think of suits and leather shoes, or jackets paired with trousers—forms that have long seemed irreplaceable and universally applicable. Little do they know that a thousand years ago, during the Northern Song Dynasty, a style of men's professional clothing matured in a more diverse form, becoming a global fashion of the era and widely emulated by overseas peoples. This was the "a hundred trades, a hundred garments" tradition, where "people of various occupations and households each had their distinctive attire." After years of in-depth research and verification, the author has collected a wealth of historical images and documentary materials. Building on previous studies and conducting vertical and horizontal comparisons, the author has produced a series of research findings, whose core content is embodied in this work—a history of Northern Song professional fashion centered on visual evidence, covering its origin, content, structure, overseas dissemination, and comparative insights. The book features an extensive collection of exquisite illustrations with rich details and diverse information. Each occupational category has undergone rigorous examination across multiple generations and perspectives, presenting the timeless charm of this splendid example of clothing civilization from the Yellow River Basin. It allows readers to experience the enduring historical value of Northern Song clothing civilization up close and from multiple angles.
