Francis Bacon, an enchanting tragedy
by Roberto Campagnolo
Description
Truth and Beauty: the meaning of life. Perhaps the only salvation to get out of the impasse of an endless tragedy that is the human condition. This is the message of the artist who, in painting reality, traps it and subjects it to critical scrutiny in order to subsequently let the emotions flow. Francis Bacon was a man who was deeply aware of the fleetingness of the human condition and used painting as a weapon.
By painting, he faced the discomfort of contemporaneity and the tragedy of existence. By painting, he got rid of his own ghosts and obsessions. His works embody the deep love for life and at the same time its fragility.
To penetrate the profound reality of human tragedy, Bacon must however rape it and in his canvases the real becomes catharsis and inner purification. The most suitable word to express this miracle that Francis Bacon performs is "enchanting", in the sense of something suspended in space and time, as if the reality of life were too precious to consume it in tragedies. From the enchanting tragedy only beauty flows, a beauty that the artist gives us so that, from his compulsive gesture, reality emerges in the sensation of a visible, dazzled present.
