This book explores fundamental philosophical issues—such as the philosophy of mind and the ontology of the external world—that are closely related to cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI). Building on this foundation, it conducts forward-looking research on the technical possibilities of VR and AI, as well as the future form of human civilization, and integrates these reflections under the emerging concept of the "metaverse."
The book attempts to demonstrate that the philosophy behind the "metaverse" is in the same line as the concept of "fully immersive virtual reality." Among its core elements, two key ontological components are "humans" and "objects," which present a tension with our conventional understanding of "consciousness" and the "external world"—an understanding shaped by our experiences in the natural world.
Through this analysis, we can gain a renewed understanding of the relationship between humans and the external world, and extend this to a fundamental grasp of technical concepts like the metaverse. This enables us to deduce and predict the range of technical possibilities and development directions for building virtual spaces such as the metaverse, conduct qualitative research on the significance and risks of various potential development paths, and thereby extend discussions from ontology to the fields of ethics and art.

Author Biography
Li Feng, who holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Sun Yat-sen University, is currently an Assistant Researcher at the Visual Art Research Institute of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. He is mainly engaged in interdisciplinary research on art and technology, focusing on issues of technical philosophy and design ethics in fields such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the metaverse.
