Tragic and humoristic fiction: Addressing the theme of clandestine migration through the novelistic genre is commonplace in contemporary Maghrebian literature. However, it is of particular interest to give it a realistic dimension that goes beyond fiction, by choosing a real spatial setting and narrating real events. The aim of this contribution is to highlight how the discursive heterogeneity present in Akram El Kebir's novel Les Fleuves Impassibles and its ideological positioning transcribe the malaise of young people in Oran, where identity and culture are intertwined in a dynamic of change among its protagonists, in a plausible spatiotemporal setting.

Algeria Literature, by Sara Kharfi In Au secours Morphée! journalist and novelist Akram El Kébir focused on a character who spent most of his time asleep, dreaming his life away. In his new novel, Les Fleuves impassibles, the heroes of the story dream their lives away and aspire to a better existence, but this time they decide to take action! Akram El Kébir continues to explore the human soul and the society in which he lives, in his novel Les Fleuves impassibles - whose title harks back to the famous poem “Le Bateau ivre” by 19th-century French poet Arthur Rimbaud, set to music a century later by Léo Ferré -, through the story of a young man who undertakes the wildest of adventures for a better life. Published in October 2019 by APIC, the novel begins when our hero, Zaki, 24, manager of the café “Les deux Mégots”, comes across a newspaper article announcing that two water cabs linking the city of Oran to the seaside commune of Ain El Turk are being put into service. A strange, unbelievably crazy idea occurs to him and begins to make its way. With no hope of improving his living conditions, feeling trapped in a life he hasn't chosen, fascinated by the young and not-so-young who undertake the sea crossing to Europe, even if it means losing their lives - the Harraga who perish at sea in search of a better or perhaps more dignified life, Zaki manages to convince his two friends, Okacha (the parking attendant/parking attendant) and Anis (a nightclub singer, not recognized for his art, even though Okacha thinks he doesn't have the talent! ) to follow him in this project. Others join their adventure, and together they embark, determined and somewhat disorganized, aboard the water cab, Le Rossinante II (like Don Quixote's horse), for Spain. On this boat, in this neutral territory, our adventurers will have to face the Italian crew and the passengers, all very different and each enclosed in their own bubble and certainties. […]
