Er sammelte alte Schellacks, gründete unabhängige Plattenlabels, holte als erster vergessene Blues-Heroen wieder auf die Bühne, entdeckte Talente wie Leo Kottke, lieferte Musik für Michelangelo Antonionis Film Zabriskie Point, beeinflußte ganze Gitarristengenerationen – und lebte doch meist an der Armutsgrenze.
