Author Biography
He is a biologist and biochemist who obtained his PhD in snake venom biochemistry in 1968 at the University of Frankfurt. He completed an early postdoctoral fellowship in Japan (Osaka University), where he elucidated the structure of α-bungarotoxin. He was habilitated in forensic medicine in 1979 and appointed honorary professor in 1985. His research focuses on the biology and biochemistry of animal and plant toxins, supported by extensive fieldwork in tropical regions. He is the author or co-author of over 300 scientific papers and several books, including Poisonous Animals, Healing Poisons and Living with Poison, and is the co-editor of the Handbook of Toxinology.
