Germany, 1930’s. Immanuel, a young Jew, finds in music the only refuge from daily persecution and violence. When, desperate, he decides to take his own life, it is a melody that saves him, played by Adalbert, a German boy set to become a Nazi officer. A deep and secret bond is born between the two, an impossible love in the shadow of Europe on the edge of the abyss.
Indeed, the horror of war overwhelms them. Immanuel is deported to one of the worst concentration camps, while Adalbert finds himself trapped in a system that forces him to choose between duty and conscience. In the depths of terror orchestrated by Dr Vaernet and the ruthless Ilse Koch, the witch of Buchenwald, their story becomes a struggle against fate.
