The Game of Jart
A high fantasy novel by Gloria Mu • finalist of the 2024 New Horizons Fantasy Fiction Award
by Gloria Mu / Aleks Klepnev
Description
Finalist for the 2024 New Horizons Fantasy Fiction Award, The Game of Jart weaves three novellas into a single literary fantasy cycle. A nomad who resists prophecy for love, a weary Minotaur who lays down his weapons, and a knight who longs for a miracle — together they echo Mongol epic, Greek myth, and Arthurian romance, yet turn toward tenderness, defiance, and the choice of life over legend.
Written in a style that is deceptively simple, the book can entertain you over a couple of evenings as an engrossing story — or, if you choose to linger, it will spark reflection and curiosity for much longer.

The Game of Jart was first published in 2022 in two formats: a text-only edition and a lavishly illustrated hardback. The illustrated version featured more than twenty full-page artworks and some fifty ornamental drolleries by Aleks Klepnev, a renowned graphic artist whose work on the book has been shown in three solo exhibitions devoted entirely to The Game of Jart.
Building on this tradition, one of the novellas (The Last Sun) is now being adapted into a graphic novel by Lay-lo, a hugely popular comic artist with over 100,000 followers on Webtoon. The adaptation is published biweekly on WEBTOON and Tapas.io, where it has already attracted thousands of readers and growing engagement.
Reviews
Now this is genuinely good. An excellent collection of three novellas.
Perhaps it’s partly my own weakness—I love books rich in allusions to world culture. Here the author navigates that vast sea like a native, weaving into his tales a dazzling variety of references, always apt, never forced.
Writers of such erudition often grow ponderous, but the chief virtue of this book is the opposite: lightness and natural flow. The prose isn’t laid brick by brick; it runs like a stream, sparkling and rumbling over its shallows. Parables—yes, but not only. Fantasy—perhaps, but even that label is too narrow. These are fairy tales at their best: magical stories for everyone, from the young pioneer to the pensioner.
The aesthetics of the Great Steppe and Tengri’s high skies blend with many-tailed fox spirits, only to twist mid-leap into the imagery of the Crusades, Avalon, and Arthurian chivalry.
Very, very good indeed.
