This series selects typical figures from Dunhuang murals (including icon paintings, narrative paintings, sutra illustrations, historical paintings, donor portraits, etc.) and painted sculptures spanning various dynasties—encompassing Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, disciples, Heavenly Kings, Apsaras, and musicians from the Buddhist realm, as well as kings, queens, nobles, and commoners from the secular world. It systematically collates and renders the costume designs and patterns reflected in these figures, while conducting theoretical research on their cultural connotations.
Each unit of the book includes original images of murals or painted sculptures from representative Dunhuang caves, rendered costume effect diagrams and detailed close-ups of key patterns based on these original images, as well as costume restoration diagrams of significant figures. The book also compiles academic papers related to the theme, providing in-depth research and explanations on the historical background, costume characteristics, and artistic styles of the images.
