The Arts: General Issues

The Machinery of Portrait: experience, of a viewer, teacher, artist

Опыт зрителя, преподавателя, художника

by Victor Melamed

Description

Russian graphic artist Victor Melamed—who is well-known for his works for the leading domestic and foreign newspapers and magazines like Kommersant, Expert, The Rolling Stone, The New Yorker—in his book shares reflections on the art of portrait in the past and present, in high and pop culture, in painting, illustrating, caricature, and design. Having a practical approach to the creation of a portrait and pulling back the curtain of the artist’s creative “kitchen”, the author discreetly raises the bar and invites us to think about how the image of a man is being formed and perceived.
