The True Story of Jeffrey Waters and His Fathers
by Jul Łyskawa
Description
Captain Jeremy Hart opened the “Hart Woodworking” furniture workshop in the town of Copperfield in 1898. The business was later passed on to his son George and then grandson Ike. It was only his great-grandson and namesake, Jeremy, who escaped the family destiny. However, Jeremy didn’t entirely live a life free of wood working – he became a sculptor. He only created one piece of furniture, a table, but it was the most unusual table ever made … At the time, the women of the family were running a bar called Beautiful Mel’s, which was the hub of Copperfield’s social life, offering customers the world’s best cherry pie and the freshest gossip.
The mysterious Jeffrey Waters appears in this seemingly quiet town and soon finds himself on the front pages of newspapers and in FBI files. Journalists, academics, curious fans and soulful tree-huggers are drawn to Copperfield. Everyone wants to find out who Waters really is, who created him, and what his existence means for humanity and the future of the world …
The True Story of Jeffrey Waters and His Fathers is a novel unlike any other that has ever been written in Poland. Part family saga, part parody, part philosophical manifesto, it is above all fabulous entertainment and a true literary rollercoaster. The author expertly combines various conventions and genres, relishing in his creative power.

Reviews
This novel defies all attempts at classification […]. Łyskawa has appeared on the literary scene like a meteor with a story as unique and eclectic as David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest, but which holds the reader in perpetual suspense. It’s an endlessly entertaining novel. – Justyna Sobolewska, Polityka
This is a debut that astonishes with its epic scope. […] It’s a novel about art, love and family, full of twists, turns and surprising characters (such as a priest to whom the Virgin Mary appears in the form of a seal). It depicts American society in a manner that is satirical, humorous and, at times, very moving. – Aleksandra Pakieła, Vogue
