Zukünfte gestalten - Design Futuring

Mit „Design Futuring“ Zukunftsszenarien strategisch erkunden, entwerfen und verhandeln

by Benedikt Groß | Eileen Mandir

Description

Shaping the future opens up a new field of business for you. And a new role with more relevance. With the help of the methods and tools presented in the book, creatives can make different, designable futures (tangible) and enable decision-makers to make wiser choices in the present. In this way, you design more than surfaces and interfaces. Ideally, you will become a designer of a better world.

The main ideas of the book:

  • Our world is complex and difficult to understand.
  • The task of designers is changing towards strategy development.
  • Designers are taking on a new role as mediators between research and politics, society.
  • Designers need new methods from futurology to be able to negotiate futures.
  • With Design Futuring, designers can create future scenarios to stimulate a discourse on diverse ideas about the future. These future scenarios enable the participants to imagine, discuss and negotiate not just one future, but many desirable futures.

Author Biography

Dr. Eileen Mandir combines several disciplines in an unconventional way: 30% engineer, 50% designer, 20% change agent. Due to her unusual career, she is one of the few academics who specialise in changing perspectives - mediating between disciplines. Eileen studied technical cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart and subsequently completed her doctorate in traffic management. Afterwards, she dedicated 10 years to the futures of mobility as a researcher, manager and strategic consultant in a wide variety of roles and positions in academia and business.

In 2016, she decided to leave her chief executive position in order to "look at, understand and change the existing system from the outside with new eyes". Today, she accompanies internal corporate and institutional transformation processes and public actor and future dialogues, gives workshops and teaches as a university lecturer on the topics of design futuring, transformation design and participatory process facilitation.

Benedikt Groß is an anti-disciplinary designer with a focus on Design Futuring and Computational Design. He studied Information and Media Design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd (DE), Design Interactions under Dunne & Raby at the Royal College of Arts (UK) and did research at the MIT Senseable City Lab (US).

Afterwards, he worked for several years in industry and the creative sector as a freelancer, research associate and design director. His work is internationally successful and has been widely published and exhibited. Benedikt Groß is co-author of the internationally successful standard work "Generative Design" and alumnus of the CMU Studio for Creative Inquiry (US). Since 2017, he has been Professor of Interaction Design and Strategic Design at the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd, where he heads the Master's programme in Strategic Design.
