        Charlotte Gainsbourg

        Transnational and transmedia stardom

        by Felicity Chaplin

Actress, singer, indie icon and embodiment of Parisian cool, Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of the most intriguing yet understated stars of our time. This book, the first detailed study of Gainsbourg, charts the trajectory of her star persona across four decades, from her early work with her father and ground-breaking collaboration with Claude Miller to her more recent collaborations with Lars von Trier and music producers like Beck and Air. The book combines textual analysis of performance, costume, place, characterisation and narrative with archival research and extra-cinematic materials to interrogate the construction of Gainsbourg's persona. As well as providing a comprehensive overview of her career to date, it examines her circulation in a transnational context and across a range of media platforms, exploring notions of gender, beauty and nationality in relation to her embodiment of femininity, Frenchness and transnationality.

        Idols of the Odeons

        Post-war British film stardom

        by Andrew Roberts

Idols of the Odeons examines British film stardom in the post-war era, a time when Hollywood movies were increasingly supplanting the Pinewood/Elstree studio system. The book encompasses the careers of sixteen actors, including Stanley Baker, Diana Dors, Norman Wisdom, Hattie Jacques, Peter Finch and Peter Sellers. Such extremely diverse careers provide the opportunity to explore overlooked films, in addition to examining how the term 'star' could apply to a stalwart leading man, a Variety comic, a self-created 'Vamp' and a character actor. Above all, this is a book that celebrates, with idiosyncratic humour and warmth, how these actors accomplished much of their best work during the transitional period between the Rank/ABPC roster of stars and the US domination of the British film industry.

        Performance art and revolution

        Stuart Brisley’s cuts in time

        by Sanja Perovic

Stuart Brisley is a pioneering multi-media and performance artist who developed performance art as a form of social action in the 1960s and 1970s. This book assesses his seminal influence on British art through a focus on his lifelong engagement with the histories and imaginaries of revolution. Linking revolutionary history with material from a critical dialogue established with Brisley over the last decade, the book recognises Brisley's corpus as a fascinating stage for addressing important questions about the relationship of art, politics and history. How do we make sense of politically committed art in a contemporary context where revolution has supposedly died or is deemed impossible? What can the afterlives of performance art tell us about the historical past, including the promises and contradictions of revolutionary time?

        Sean Connery

        Acting, stardom, and national identity

        by Andrew Spicer

This ground-breaking study provides an authoritative account of the career of one of cinema's most iconic stars. It highlights the importance of Connery's early work, especially his television appearances, as well as dissecting the 'Bond phenomenon' that propelled him to international stardom on an unprecedented scale for a British actor. Connery' s twenty-year struggle to escape 'Bondage' is discussed at length, including his reinvention as a father-mentor, which enabled him to enjoy a second period of superstardom from The Untouchables (1987) onwards and to 'age successfully'. The book situates Connery's performances within their economic and cultural contexts and analyses his complex embodiment of iconicity and national identity, notably his public activism campaigning for Scottish independence. Drawing on a wide range of archival and other sources, this innovative study will be essential reading for those interested in the strange phenomenon of stardom.
