        Object matters

        Condoms, adolescence and time

        by Nicole Vitellone

During the mid 1980s the object of the condom became associated with the prevention of HIV/AIDS. In this book Nicole Vitellone investigates the consequences of this shift in the objects meaning. Focusing on the US, British and Australian contexts Object matters addresses the impact of the discourse of safer sex on our lives and in particular the lives of adolescents. Addressing AIDS public health campaigns, sex education policies, sex research on adolescence and debates on the eroticization of safer sex, the author looks at how the condom has affected our awareness of ourselves, of one another and our futures. In her examination of the condom in the late twentieth century, Vitellone critically engages with a range of literatures including those concerned with sexuality, adolescence, methods, gender and the body. This book will be of interest to sex educators, academics as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the areas of Sociology, History, Cultural Studies and Gender Studies.

Leather, sex, archives and contemporary art

        by Andy Campbell, Amelia Jones

What are the archives of gay and lesbian leather histories, and how have contemporary artists mined these archives to create a queer politics of the present? This book sheds light on an area long ignored by traditional art history and LGBTQ studies, examining the legacies of the visual and material cultures of US leather communities. It discusses the work of contemporary artists such as Patrick Staff, Dean Sameshima, Monica Majoli, AK Burns and AL Steiner, and the artist collective Die Kränken, showing how archival histories and contemporary artistic projects might be applied in a broader analysis of LGBTQ culture and norms. Hanky codes, blurry photographs of Tom of Finland drawings, a pin sash weighted down with divergent histories - these become touchstones for writing leather histories.

        Teenage intimacies

Young women, sex and social life in England, 1950-80

        by Hannah Charnock

Teenage Intimacies offers a new account of 'sexual revolution' in mid-twentieth century England. Rather than focusing on 'Swinging London', the book reveals the transformations in social life that took place in school playgrounds, local cinemas, and suburban bedrooms. Based on over 300 personal testimonies, Teenage Intimacies traces the everyday experiences of teenage girls, illuminating how romance, sex and intimacy shaped their young lives. The book shows how sex became embedded in ideas about 'growing up' and explores how heterosexuality influenced young women's social lives and vice versa. It offers new explanations of why sexual mores shifted in this period, revealing the pivotal role that young women played in changing sexual values, cultures and practices in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

        Ageing and new intimacies

Gender, sexuality and temporality in an English salsa scene

        by Sarah Milton

The 'baby boom' generation, born between the 1940s and the 1960s, is often credited with pioneering new and creative ways of relating, doing intimacy and making families. With this cohort of men and women in Britain now entering mid and later life, they are also said to be revolutionising the experience of ageing. Are the romantic practices of this 'revolutionary cohort' breaking with tradition and allowing new ways of understanding and doing ageing and relating to emerge? Based on ethnographic fieldwork in salsa classes and life history interviews, this book documents the meanings of desire and romance, and 'new' intimacies, among women in mid and later life. Challenging notions of the revolutionary 'baby boomers', it details how these practices, experiences and identities are intersected and informed by age, class, whiteness, and a pervasive concern to remain respectable.

        Painful pleasures

        Sadomasochism in medieval cultures

by Christopher Vaccaro, David Matthews, Anke Bernau, James Paz

This timely volume ventures into the subject of sadomasochism in varied aspects of medieval life. Saint's Lives and mystical treatises provide evidence of failed sadism and empowering masochism. Literary culture in the form of epics and courtly tales preserve stories of eroticised power. These exciting chapters join together to form a picture of medieval culture that is kinky in its practice and deeply psychological at its core.
