African security in the twenty-first century

        Challenges and opportunities

        by Stephen Emerson, Hussein Solomon

This book explores and analyses the evolving African security paradigm in light of the multitude of diverse threats and challenges facing the continent and the international community. It challenges current thinking and traditional security constructs as woefully inadequate to meet the real security needs of African governments and their 1 billion plus citizens in an increasingly globalised and interdependent world. Through the lens of human security the authors' examine the continent's most pressing security challenges-from identity conflict and failing states to terrorism, disease, and environmental degradation-and in doing so provide a comprehensive look at the complexities of building peace and stability in modern-day Africa. Not only does the book critically assess the state of progress in addressing security challenges, but it presents new strategies and tools for more effectively engaging Africans and the global community in their common search for solutions.

Counter-radicalisation policy and the securing of British identity

        The politics of Prevent

        by Thomas Martin

This book offers an innovative account of Prevent, Britain's counter-radicalisation strategy, situating it as a novel form of power that has played a central role in the production and the policing of contemporary British identity. Drawing on interviews with those at the heart of Prevent's development, the book provides readers with an in-depth history and conceptualisation of the policy. The book demonstrates that Prevent is an ambitious new way of thinking about violence that has led to the creation of a radical new role for the state: tackling vulnerability to radicalisation. Detailing the history of the policy, and the concepts and practices that have been developed within Prevent, this book critically engages with the assumptions on which they are based and the forms of power they mobilise.

The impact of the Troubles on the Republic of Ireland, 1968–79

        Boiling volcano?

        by Brian Hanley

The first book to examine in detail the impact of the Northern Irish Troubles on southern Irish society. This study vividly illustrates how life in the Irish Republic was affected by the conflict north of the border and how people responded to the events there. It documents popular mobilization in support of northern nationalists, the reaction to Bloody Sunday, the experience of refugees and the popular cultural debates the conflict provoked. For the first time the human cost of violence is outlined, as are the battles waged by successive governments against the IRA. Focusing on debates at popular level rather than among elites, the book illustrates how the Troubles divided southern opinion and produced long-lasting fissures.

        Non-Western responses to terrorism

by Michael J. Boyle, John Horgan

This edited collection surveys how non-Western states have responded to the threats of domestic and international terrorism in ways consistent with and reflective of their broad historical, political, cultural and religious traditions. It presents a series of eighteen case studies of counterterrorism theory and practice in the non-Western world, including countries such as China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Egypt and Brazil. These case studies, written by country experts and drawing on original language sources, demonstrate the diversity of counter-terrorism theory and practice and illustrate how the world 'sees' and responds to terrorism is different from the way that the United States, the United Kingdom and many European governments do. This volume - the first ever comprehensive account of counter-terrorism in the non-Western world - will be of interest to students, scholars, students and policymakers responsible for developing counter-terrorism policy.

        Japan's new security partnerships

        Beyond the security alliance

        by Wilhelm Vosse, Paul Midford

After decades of solely relying on the United States for its national security needs, over the last decade, Japan has begun to actively develop and deepen its security ties with a growing number of countries and actors in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, a development that has further intensified under the Shinzo Abe administration. This is the first book that provides a comprehensive analysis of the motives and objectives from both the Japanese and the partner-countries' perspectives, and asks what this might mean for the security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, and what lessons can be learned for security cooperation more broadly. This book is for those interested in Japan's security policy beyond the US-Japan security alliance, and non-US centred bilateral and multilateral security cooperation. It is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate level courses on regional security cooperation and strategic partnerships, and Japanese foreign and security policy.

        I Refuse to Condemn

Resisting racism in times of national security

        by Asim Qureshi

In times of heightened national security, scholars and activists from the communities under suspicion often attempt to alert the public to the more complex stories behind the headlines. But when they raise questions about the government, military and police policy, they are routinely shut down as terrorist sympathisers or apologists for gang culture. In such environments, there is immense pressure to condemn what society at large fears. This collection explains how the expectation to condemn has emerged, tracking it against the normalisation of racism, and explores how writers manage to subvert expectations as part of their commitment to anti-racism.

        The securitisation of Islam

Indirect speech acts and affect in the United States post 9/11

by Clara Eroukhmanoff, Emmanuel Pierre Guittet, Peter Lawler

This book is about the securitisation of Islam in the United States from the Bush to the Trump administration. It explores the ways in which the securitisation is justified and felt when president G.W Bush, Barack Obama and (even) President Donald J. Trump have often securitised through deception and covert language rather than by mobilizing a security grammar. This book contributes to the debate on islamophobia and the construction of Islam as a threat to the liberal order since the 11 September attacks. Its approach is innovative by connecting covert racism and the securitisation of minority groups, through what the book calls 'indirect securitisation', and by introducing emotions and affect to securitisation studies. This book is of interest to a wide audience interested in Islamophobia in the US, security studies, the 'emotions turn' in International Relations, and scholars interested in theories of language.
