Charles Dickens called his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth his 'best and truest friend'. Georgina saw Dickens as much more than a friend. They lived together for twenty-eight years, during which time their relationship constantly changed. The sister of his wife Catherine, the sharp and witty Georgina moved into the Dickens home aged fifteen. What began as a father-daughter relationship blossomed into a genuine rapport, but their easy relations were fractured when Dickens had a mid-life crisis and determined to rid himself of Catherine. Georgina's refusal to leave Dickens and his desire for her to remain in his household led to rumours of an affair and even illegitimate children. The author discusses kept women characters in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton and Ruth, Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, and examines the methods their authors use to encourage reader empathy. This book also usefully demonstrates how to identify kept women when they are less visible in texts. I look at primary women characters in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Dickens' Hard Times and Dombey and Son, and George Gissing's The Odd Women.

Von den vielen Projekten, an denen Christa und Gerhard Wolf mit dem Regisseur Konrad Wolf arbeiteten, konnten sie nur ein einziges realisieren: Während die Verfilmung der Moskauer Novelle (1961) und weitere Projekte aus der Zeit nach 1965 an politischen Widerständen scheiterten, wurde Der Geteilte Himmel 1964 ein großer Erfolg. Vor allem aber ist sie eine scharfe Beobachterin der sozialen und politischen Verhältnisse, die die Freundschaft verfolgter Dissidenten wie Lew Kopelew gewinnt. In den Tagebuchnotizen entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild des Riesenreichs im Wandel, bis hin zu den Tagen des dramatischen Endes, und gleichzeitig erleben wir Christa Wolf im persönlichen Dialog mit sich selbst und den russischen Freunden.
