View Rights PortalThis volume is the first ever attempt to unite and translate some of the key texts which informed Johan Huizinga's famous study of the Burgundian court, The Waning of the Middle Ages, a work which has never gone out of print. It combines these texts with sources that Huizinga did not consider, those that illuminate the wider civic world that the Burgundian court inhabited and the dynamic interaction between court and city. Through these sources, and an introduction offering new perspectives on recent historiography, the book tests whether Huizinga's controversial vision of the period still stands. Covering subjects including ceremonial events, such as the spectacles and gargantuan banquets that made the Burgundian dukes the talk of Europe, the workings of the court, and jousting, archery and rhetoric competitions, the book will appeal to students of late medieval and early modern Europe and to those with wider interests in court culture, ritual and ceremony.
On 25 January 1474, Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, appeared before his subjects in Dijon. Robed in silk, gold and precious jewels and wearing a headpiece that gave the illusion of a crown, he made a speech in which he cryptically expressed his desire to become a king. Three years later, Charles was killed at the battle of Nancy, an event that plunged the Great Principality of Burgundy into chaos. This book, innovative and essential, not only explores Burgundian history and historiography but offers a complete synthesis about the nature of politics in this region, considered both from the north and the south. Focusing on political ideologies, a number of important issues are raised relating to the medieval state, the signification of the nation under the 'Ancien Regime', the role of warfare in the creation of political power and the impact of political loyalties in the exercise of government. In doing so, the book challenges a number of existing ideas about the Burgundian state.

The image many people have of depression is devastating - a chronic condition that leaves not only the sufferer but also their loved ones at a loss. Unfortunately, psychotherapies often focus on deficits rather than individual strengths and resources. Although this makes patients feel understood, there is a risk that they will become stuck in the role of victim. But what about those who seem to be functioning normally, those who masterfully hide their depression behind a smile? High-functioning depression" is often overlooked because people affected by it have good coping strategies to deal with everyday life. In this groundbreaking book, Dr Michelle Hildebrandt, a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, shows how high-functioning depression can be recognised and how resource-oriented therapy can help not only those affected, but also other people with depression and their relatives. This book broadens the picture of depression and creates a space of hope.
A crisis does not make a disease. It only becomes dangerous when we get stuck – in the ways of thinking and acting that are rooted in our fears and desires, but not in reality. That way, we wear ourselves out for nothing; exhaustion and frustration increase, and may even end in depression. This book sheds a light on ten main stress situations that may be the reason for depression. It goes far beyond the usual explanations of the symptoms of depression or individual stories, and is a treasure trove for people who want to understand what has caused them to wear themselves out mentally and how they can lift themselves out of this low.

Feeling blue is the first book-length history of colour in modern hospitals. It examines colour in relation to six key themes - hygiene, emotion, humanisation, homeliness, play, consumerism - which are tied together by the idea of the 'modern' hospital. The book does not simply describe changes to the appearance of hospitals over time, but instead thinks expansively about the role of colour in shaping how hospitals felt. It uses colour to understand the layered meanings of modernity in twentieth-century Britain, and its relationship to the 'mundane' or everyday life of hospitals.
