View Rights PortalThis volume proposes new insights into the uses of classical mythology by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, focusing on interweaving processes in early modern appropriations of myth. Its 11 essays show how early modern writing intertwines diverse myths and plays with variant versions of individual myths that derive from multiple classical sources, as well as medieval, Tudor and early modern retellings and translations. Works discussed include poems and plays by William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and others. Essays concentrate on specific plays including The Merchant of Venice and Dido Queen of Carthage, tracing interactions between myths, chronicles, the Bible and contemporary genres. Mythological figures are considered to demonstrate how the weaving together of sources deconstructs gendered representations. New meanings emerge from these readings, which open up methodological perspectives on multi-textuality, artistic appropriation and cultural hybridity.
In contrast to vitamins and minerals, for a long time, science paid only scant attention to amino acids, but this all changed when scientists Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1998 for their work on amino acids. Pharmacist Uwe Gröber, Head of the Academy for Micronutrient Medicine in Essen and Prof. Klaus Kisters, MD, Head of the Department of Medicine at St Anna Hospital in Herne – both experts in micronutrient medicine – have reviewed the subject and explain clearly and in practical terms: ■ The importance of individual amino acids for our health ■ How they are optimally used in combination with vitamins, minerals and trace elements ■ Which diseases can be positively influenced in this way. ■ Effects on colds and influenza, cold sores, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, ADHD as well as stress and burnout are examined in more detail. A further chapter is devoted to amino acids and their use in sportsmen and -women.
This is the first book to survey in comparative form the transmission of imperial ideas to the public in six European countries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The chapters, focusing on France, Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Italy, provide parallel studies of the manner in which colonial ambitions and events in the respective European empires were given wider popular visibility. The international group of contributors, who are all scholars working at the cutting edge of these fields, place their work in the context of governmental policies, the economic bases of imperial expansion, major events such as wars of conquest, the emergence of myths of heroic action in exotic contexts, religious and missionary impulses, as well as the new media which facilitated such popular dissemination. Among these media were the press, international exhibitions, popular literature, educational institutions and methods, ceremonies, church sermons and lectures, monuments, paintings and much else.
In "Without a Word" von Jennifer Schumann begegnet die junge, ambitionierte Schauspielerin Madeleine während einer Auszeit im Café ihrer Freundin einem geheimnisvollen Stammgast. Dieser Mann, der weder spricht noch Madeleine direkt ansieht, übt eine unerklärliche Faszination auf sie aus. Trotz seiner abweisenden Haltung lässt Madeleine nicht locker und bemüht sich, ihm näher zu kommen. Nach und nach enthüllt sich ihr der Grund für sein Verhalten, und sie erkennt, dass Liebe nicht immer Worte benötigt, um wahr und tief zu sein. Die Geschichte erzählt von der langsamen, aber intensiven Annäherung zwischen Madeleine und dem jungen Mann, der sich später als Eden herausstellt. Trotz der sprachlosen Kommunikation entwickelt sich zwischen ihnen eine tiefe Verbundenheit, die zeigt, wie stark nonverbale Interaktionen sein können. Madeleine lernt dabei nicht nur Edens Geheimnis kennen, sondern auch, dass Liebe Hindernisse überwinden kann, die auf den ersten Blick unüberwindbar scheinen. Durch ihre Hartnäckigkeit und ihr offenes Herz entdeckt sie eine neue Art der Liebe – eine Liebe, die ohne Worte auskommt, dafür aber umso eindrücklicher spricht. One of the few books which systematically brings post-structuralist theory to bear on substantive political analysis. Offers accessible accounts of different strands of discourse theory such as deconstruction, psychoanalysis and genealogy, which are applied to the analysis of specific cases such as Northern Ireland and contemporary East European politics. Each chapter addresses a key theme and issue in contemporary politics. Draws on inspiration from Ernesto Laclau, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault and Jacques Lacan. Contains a clear introductory statement of the theoretical approach used and concludes with an assessment of the future directions of discourse theory in the social sciences. ;
Do we still need feminism in Europe? Equality or difference feminism? A new generation of feminists has now broken away from the feminism of the 1960s. The old white Cis man has been discredited, by the "#MeToo" movement at the latest. Sexualised violence against women has been outlawed, perpetrators taken to court. So everything’s good? No, of course not. Men still dominate public discourse; men are unchallenged in leadership positions in politics, society and business; male power still prevails in the domestic environment as well. The extent to which men fight back when they feel threatened by feminism is also evident in the revival of authoritarian nationalist politicians in Europe and around the world. The seven authors shed light on feminist struggles in different areas of life, and illustrate the range of feminism today.
This book is the first ever concordance to the rhymes of Spenser's epic. It gives the reader unparalleled access to the formal nuts and bolts of this massive poem: the rhymes which he used to structure its intricate stanzas. As well as the main concordance to the rhymes, the volume features a wealth of ancillary materials, which will be of value to both professional Spenserians and students, including distribution lists and an alphabetical listing of all the words in The Faerie Queene. The volume breaks new ground by including two studies by Richard Danson Brown and J. B. Lethbridge, so that the reader is given provocative analyses alongside the raw data about Spenser as a rhymer. Brown considers the reception of rhyme, theoretical models and how Spenser's rhymes may be reading for meaning. Lethbridge in contrast discusses the formulaic and rhetorical character of the rhymes. ;
