Race and settler colonialism in Southern Rhodesia, 1919–79

This book offers the first comprehensive history of white workers from the end of the First World War to Zimbabwean independence in 1980. It reveals how white worker identity was constituted, examines the white labouring class as an ethnically and nationally heterogeneous formation comprised of both men and women, and emphasises the active participation of white workers in the ongoing and contested production of race. White wage labourers' experiences, both as exploited workers and as part of the privileged white minority, offer insight into how race and class co-produced one another and how boundaries fundamental to settler colonialism were regulated and policed. Based on original research conducted in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the UK, this book offers a unique theoretical synthesis of work on gender, whiteness studies, labour histories, settler colonialism, Marxism, emotions and the New African Economic History.

Drawing mainly on unpublished material from the India Office Records, the National Archives, and private collections of charitable organizations, this book examines not only the attitudes of British officials towards South Asians in their midst, but also the actual application of these attitudes in decisions pertaining to them. Ihre Geschichte beginnt in Schlesien: Von dort zogen die Scholems Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts nach Berlin und eröffneten eine Druckerei, die es zu einigem Wohlstand brachten. Arthur und Betty Scholem hatten vier Söhne, die alle einen unterschiedlichen Weg einschlugen: Reinhold, 1891 geboren, wurde im Kaiserreich zum deutsch-nationalen Juden; Erich, Jahrgang 1893, zum nationalliberalen, assimilierten Juden; Werner Scholem, 1985 in Berlin geboren, wurde zu einem prominenten Vertreter eines linken Sozialismus und saß in der Weimarer Republik für die KPD im Reichstag. Gerhard Scholem schließlich, 1897 geboren, bekannte sich früh zum Zionismus, lernte Hebräisch und wanderte 1923 nach Palästina aus, wo er als Gershom Scholem einer der bedeutendsten Forscher jüdischer Mystik wurde.Jay Geller zeigt hier zum ersten Mal, wie sich in einer Familie sich vier ganz unterschiedliche Ausprägungen der deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte versammeln: Nationalismus wie Liberalismus, Sozialismus wie Zionismus.

Against the delusion of permanent growth

We moderns were the inhabitants of an age of impetuous forward movement and voracious discontent. Our main virtue was to increase our reach. Increasing our having and accelerating our being were the signposts towards the future. We just could not get enough. Using the blinkers of ignorance and self-anaesthesia, however, we managed to forget the tremendous costs incurred by this intoxication. Now disillusionment has set in. We look to the future with anxiety. We know that we have long since crossed a line and that a revision of our lifestyle is imminent. We have a bad feeling, and doubts about progress often give way to anger and rebellion. Which stocks of the modern narrative should we defend; which would we do better to let go? How will we even "be able to stop"? The path to a different society needs an attractive goal, because without the prospect of a different, better life, we will not move forward. We should start practising immediately. There is no time to lose.
