British government film units, 1928–52

In the years after the First World War the British government had to adapt its communication policy to connect with the new mass electorate. This book examines the government's own Film Units and their slow development of the Public Information Film. By reviewing the entire film catalogue produced by the Empire Marketing Board, the General Post Office and Crown Film Units, particular themes are identified which not only reflect the demands of the Units' sponsors but also the anxieties and concerns of the 1930s and 1940s. The impact of the films is explored through the contemporary reaction of the audiences to them. By the time the Crown Film Unit was closed in 1952 a style of Public Information Film had been developed and continued into the 1970s.

It consists of fifty categories arranged in alphabetical order, among which are allegory, bricolage, classicism, contradiction, desire, destructuring and writing. Die Abtreibung gehört auch heute noch zu den umstrittensten Fragen unserer Gesellschaft. Weder findet sie eine breite gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz, noch wird offen über sie gesprochen. Abtreibung ist nach wie vor ein gesellschaftliches Tabu. Eine merkwürdige Grauzone umgibt sie. Das mag durchaus überraschen, da die Abtreibung in den westlichen Ländern unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen legal ist. Das Recht auf Abtreibung gehört zudem zu den Errungenschaften der Frauenbewegung und des Kampfes um die Selbstbestimmung der Frau. Der französische Soziologe Luc Boltanski versucht, diese paradoxe Situation zu erklären. Dabei greift er zum einen auf ausführliche Interviews mit einhundert Frauen zurück, die von ihren persönlichen Erfahrungen mit der Abtreibung berichten, und rekonstruiert zum anderen eine umfassende Geschichte der gesellschaftlichen Abtreibungspraxis von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Die Entscheidung für oder gegen Abtreibung, so skizziert Boltanski seine Hauptthese, erweist sich dabei als unauflösbarer Widerspruch, der der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung insgesamt innewohnt: Einerseits ist jedes einzelne menschliche Wesen einzigartig und unersetzbar, andererseits ist seine Austauschbarkeit Grundvoraussetzung dafür, daß sich die Gesellschaft fortwährend demographisch erneuert. Diese Paradoxie wiederholt sich in der symbolischen Ordnung, die der Schwangerschaft, der Geburt und der Abtreibung ihre gesellschaftlichen Regeln gibt. Boltanskis Buch führte in Frankreich zu einer heftigen und überaus kontroversen Debatte, in der es um nichts weniger ging als um die Grundregeln der gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft.

In recent years film scholarship has attempted to negotiate the tension between the nationally specific and the internationally ubiquitous, discussing how globalisation has influenced film making and surrounding cultural practice. These broader social concerns have prompted scholars to emphasise a redefinition of national cinemas beyond strict national boundaries and to pay attention to the transnational character of any national site of film production and reception. This collection provides a thorough investigation of contemporary Spanish cinema within a transnational framework, by positing cinematic genres as the meeting spaces between a variety of diverse forces that necessarily operate within but also across territorial spaces. Decades before the emergence of a French self-styled 'hood' film around 1995, French filmmakers looked beyond the gates of the capital for inspiration and content. In the Paris suburbs they found an inexhaustible reservoir of forms, landscapes and social types in which to anchor their fictions, from bourgeois villas and bucolic riverside cafés to post-war housing estates and postmodern new towns. For the first time in English, contributors to this volume address key aspects of this long film history, marked by such towering figures as Jean Renoir, Jacques Tati and Jean-Luc Godard. Idyllic or menacing, expansive or claustrophobic, the suburb served divergent aesthetic and ideological programmes across the better part of a century.
