        Time for mapping

        Cartographic temporalities

        by Sybille Lammes, Chris Perkins, Alex Gekker, Sam Hind, Clancy Wilmott, Daniel Evans

        Maps take place in time as well as representing space. The Google map on your smartphone appears to fix the world, serving as a practical spatial tool, but in practice is deployed in ways that draw attention to memories, rhythm, synchronicity, sequence and duration. This interdisciplinary collection focuses on how these temporal aspects of mapping might be understood, at a time when mapping technologies have been profoundly changed by digital developments. It contrasts different aspects of this temporality, bringing together experts from critical cartography, media studies and science and technology studies. Together the chapters offer a unique interdisciplinary focus revealing the complex and social ways in which time in wrapped up with digital technologies and revealed in everyday mapping tasks: from navigating across cities, to serving as scientific groundings for news stories; from managing smart cities, to visual art practice. It brings time back into the map!

        Concept Maps and Concept Mapping in Nursing

        How to Record and Structure Complex Care Situations

        by Dave Zanon-Di Nardo, Claudia Leoni-Scheiber

        Concept maps are graphical representations of interrelationships in complex care situations. They show patterns from the features and characteristics of a situation and thus visualize the specific image of the patient. In the process of concept mapping, the case-related nursing situation can be analyzed and assessed in a differentiated manner within the framework of the nursing process. Concept maps visualize case-related assessment data as well as nursing diagnoses and their relationships to each other in a bundled way. Thus, nursing interventions are derived to solve or alleviate current or potential health problems. Nursing goals and desired nursing outcomes can be named. The book is a valuable toolbox for teaching, training, and studying nursing and the nursing process.

        Maps

        Roman

        by Nuruddin Farah, Inge Uffelmann

        Askars Geburt im Ogaden, dem von Äthiopien annektierten Hochland, wird von traurigen Ereignissen überschattet: Seine Mutter stirbt kurz nach der Entbindung, sein Vater, Angehöriger der Western Somali Liberation Front, ist bei einem Kampfeinsatz ums Leben gekommen. Askars Ziehmutter wird Misra, die nicht aus Somalia, sondern aus Äthiopien stammt. Zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich eine Welt von Liebe und Vertrauen, die sich von der Gewalt des Bürgerkriegs abhebt. Doch Misra lebt nicht nur für Askar; auch Askars Onkel Qorrax und Aw-Adan, Priester des Dorfes, erheben Anspruch auf ihre Zuneigung. Schließlich treiben die politischen Wirren den halbwüchsigen Jungen in die Hauptstadt Mogadischu; und dort trifft er Jahre später wieder auf Misra, die beschuldigt wird, somalische Freiheitskämpfer an Äthiopien verraten zu haben.

        An Historical Atlas of Staffordshire

        by A. D. M. Phillips, C. B. Phillips

        Within its ancient boundaries, Staffordshire is a county of diverse and contrasting historic landscapes. World-renowned industrial complexes sit alongside agricultural systems; castles rub shoulders with urban-industrial housing; the cathedral centre of a vast diocese lies close to the birthplace of primitive Methodism; overtly planned landscapes mingle with the uplands of the Moorlands and the heathlands of Cannock Chase. These many and varied landscapes are both products and reflections of a multiplicity of histories, and students of the county have been keen to explore and relate these pasts. However, no systematic attempt has previously been made to express these accounts in spatial form. This book seeks to demonstrate by maps the various histories that contribute to the diversity of Staffordshire. With its succinct discussions and detailed map presentations of these themes, incorporating new thinking and recent research, the atlas provides an innovative and major contribution to the study of the history of Staffordshire. ;

        Taschenatlas der abgelegenen Inseln

        Fünfundfünfzig Inseln, auf denen ich nie war und niemals sein werde

        by Judith Schalansky

        Als Judith Schalanskys Atlas 2009 erschien, herrschte zwar allgemeine Verzückung über Idee, Konzept und Gestaltung: fünfzig entlegene Inseln – von Tristan da Cunha bis zum Clipperton-Atoll, von der Weihnachts- bis zur Osterinsel – nach Ozeanen geordnet, kunstvoll illustriert und mit je einer absurd-abgründigen Geschichte, die von historischen Begebenheiten und naturwissenschaftlichen Berichten inspiriert ist. Niemand konnte jedoch ahnen, dass der Atlas nicht nur zum internationalen Bestseller und mit diversen Preisen ausgezeichneten Designobjekt werden, sondern ein regelrechtes Zeitalter der »poetischen Atlanten« einläuten und weltweit unzählige Nachahmer finden würde. Und nie war so aktuell wie heute, was dieses Buch beweist: dass die abenteuerlichsten Reisen im Kopf stattfinden, mit dem Finger auf der Landkarte. Die erweiterte Erfolgsausgabe von 2021 mit neuem Vorwort und fünf neuen Inseln wird hier in einer schön gestalteten, gebundenen Taschenbuchausgabe vorgelegt.

        Cultural identities and the aesthetics of Britishness

        by Andrew Thompson, Dana Arnold, John Mackenzie

        Considers how notions of Britishness were constructed and promoted through architecture, landscape, painting, sculpture and literature. Maps important moments in the self-conscious evolution of the idea of 'nation' against a broad cultural historical framework. An important addition to the field of postcolonial studies as it looks at how British identity creation affected those living in England - most study in this area has thus far focused on the effect of such identity creation upon the colonial subject. Broad appeal due to wide subject matter covered. Examines just how 'constructed' a national identity is - past and present. ;
