This book offers important new insights into the history and culture of the Gaelic-speaking world from the mid-fifteenth century through to the reign of James VI and I. Throughout this period, the reach of the English and Scottish crowns within these western regions was limited. The initiative lay with local communities and royal power was contingent upon negotiating with well-established and largely autonomous aristocratic lineages. Moreover, events within this western world could exert a powerful, often unpredictable, influence upon the affairs of the wider archipelago. Using a series of case studies, this collection examines the evolving relationship between Ireland and Scotland in rich detail. It demonstrates how this world interacted with the encroaching English and Scottish states and underlines the importance of paying closer attention to this neglected area of Irish and British history.

Steffen Mau untersucht die Techniken dieser neuen Soziometrie und zeigt ihre Folgen auf. Die Inszenierung von Produkten und Lebensstilen ist ein zentrales Merkmal des ästhetischen Kapitalismus, dessen Erscheinungsformen Böhme nachspürt. Indem er sich mit der Ideologie des Wachstums, der Soundlandschaft in Shoppingcentern und dem Zusammenhang von Leistungsideologie und Konsum befasst, leistet er einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einer Rekonstruktion und Erweiterung der Theorie der Kulturindustrie auf den Bereich des Wirtschaftslebens.

Leprosy and colonialism investigates the history of leprosy in Suriname within the context of Dutch colonial power and racial conflict, from the plantation economy and the age of slavery to its legacy in the modern colonial state. It explores the relationship between the modern stigmatization and exclusion of people affected with leprosy, and the political tensions and racial fears originating in colonial slave society, exerting their influence until after the decolonization up to the present day. In the book colonial sources are read from shifting perspectives, of the colonial rulers and, 'from below', the ruled. Though leprosy is today a neglected tropical disease, recognizing influences of our colonial heritage in our global management of health and disease, and exploring the perspectives of other cultures are essential in a time in which migration movements make the permeability of boundaries, and transmission of diseases, more common then perhaps ever before.
