Was ist Faschismus? Eine Bewegung? Ein gleichgeschaltetes Herrschaftssystem? Für Paul Mason ist Faschismus nicht zuletzt ein Gedankengebäude. In dessen Zentrum steht eine ethnisch definierte Mehrheit, die sich als Opfer emanzipatorischer Bestrebungen sieht und alles ablehnt, was sie in ihrem Widerstand dagegen einschränken könnte: liberale Demokratie, Medien, Wissenschaft. Blickt man durch diese Linse auf den Hindunationalismus eines Narendra Modi, auf den queerfeindlichen Kurs bestimmter osteuropäischer Regierungen oder die Lügen eines Donald Trump, sind Übereinstimmungen unverkennbar. Wie der Faschismus der Zwischenkriegszeit gedeihen diese Phänomene in einer Phase tiefgreifender Umbrüche. Doch wie kann man sie aufhalten? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, bringt Mason seine großen Begabungen zum Einsatz: historische Neugier und das Talent, Theorien griffig zusammenzufassen. Die Hoffnung, man müsse nur die Unwahrheiten der Autoritären aufdecken, ist aus seiner Sicht naiv. Stattdessen müssen Liberale und Linke gemeinsam eine positive Gegenvision entwickeln und mit ökonomischen Reformen das Leben aller Menschen verbessern.

Zur Theorie des operativen Displacements

Es sind die Kommunikationen und die Modi ihrer Verkettung, die Peter Fuchs untersucht. In heuristischer Askese trennt er dabei die Ebene der Kommunikabilien, der Semantizität, des Mitgeteilten, der Bedeutung von der Ebene der Operativität, von der er annimmt, daß sie es ist, die - gleichsam vorprädikativ - den Sinn zuschneidet und möglich werden läßt, den wir semantisch jeder Äußerung abgreifen. Im Rükken aller möglichen Bedeutung werden Sinnverteilungsmechanismen wirksam, die als »operative Displacements« Sinnwelten erzeugen, die Fuchs als aufklärerische, als romantische und als nebulose (psychologische) beschreibt, ohne zu behaupten, daß es nur diese Formen von Kommunikation gäbe, und von denen er sagt, daß sie quer zur funktionalen Differenzierung des Gesellschaftssystems ihre Wirkung entfalten. Werden solche operativen Formen von Kommunikation angewählt, entscheidet die bloße Anwahl über das, was dann noch kommunikativ möglich ist. Beispielhaft wird dieser Effekt am System der modernen Kunst vorgeführt. Moderne Kommunikation wird in diesen Analysen unterhalb der Semantik, die sie betreibt, untersucht.
