Beyond the Pale and Highland Line

The Irish and Scottish Gaelic world

        by Simon Egan

This book offers important new insights into the history and culture of the Gaelic-speaking world from the mid-fifteenth century through to the reign of James VI and I. Throughout this period, the reach of the English and Scottish crowns within these western regions was limited. The initiative lay with local communities and royal power was contingent upon negotiating with well-established and largely autonomous aristocratic lineages. Moreover, events within this western world could exert a powerful, often unpredictable, influence upon the affairs of the wider archipelago. Using a series of case studies, this collection examines the evolving relationship between Ireland and Scotland in rich detail. It demonstrates how this world interacted with the encroaching English and Scottish states and underlines the importance of paying closer attention to this neglected area of Irish and British history.

Sunningdale, the Ulster Workers' Council strike and the struggle for democracy in Northern Ireland

by Edited by David McCann, Cillian McGrattan

The 'Sunningdale experiment' of 1973-4 witnessed the first attempt to establish peace in Northern Ireland through power-sharing. However, its provisions, particularly the cross-border 'Council of Ireland', proved to be a step too far. The experiment floundered amid ongoing paramilitary-led violence, finally collapsing in May 1974 as a result of the Ulster Workers' Council strike. Drawing on new scholarship from some of the top political historians working on the period, this book presents a series of reflections on how key protagonists struggled with notions of power-sharing and the 'Irish dimension', and how those struggles inhibited a deepening of democracy and the ending of violence for so long.

        Ireland, slavery and the Caribbean

        Interdisciplinary perspectives

        by Finola O'Kane, Ciarán O'Neill

Ireland, slavery and the Caribbean is a complex and ground-breaking collection of essays. Grounded in history, it integrates perspectives from art historians, architectural and landscape historians, and literary scholars to produce a genuinely interdisciplinary collection that spans from 1620-1830: the high point of European colonialism. By exploring imperial, national and familial relationships from their building blocks of plantation, migration, property and trade, it finds new ways to re-create and question how slavery made the Atlantic world.

        Spenserian tracts

'A Brief Discourse of Ireland' and 'The Supplication of the Blood of the English' from the Munster revolt of 1598

        by Hiram Morgan

Morgan's study of key texts situating Edmund Spenser and the plantation in Munster in the late 1590s reveals not only a hatred and abiding fear of the Catholic Irish but also disturbing tensions with the state in England including the Queen herself. In doing so, he has combined traditional historical and literary methods with stylometric document testing to reveal the authorship of these controversial contemporary tracts. Overall this insightful book reimagines the English colonial mentality of the period by examining its underbelly of anonymous texts.

        Fenians and Ribbonmen

the development of republican politics in East Tyrone, 1898–1918

        by Fergal McCluskey

        East Tyrone sits at the crossroads of Irish politics. This book commences with the struggle between Belfast's 'Wee Joe' Devlin, the coming man of the Irish Parliamentary Party, and the Irish Republican Brotherhood to gain mastery over the burgeoning Ancient Order of Hibernians and, with it, control of popular nationalist politics in Ulster. It then recounts the fascinating and often violent story of the relationship between local Fenians and Ribbonmen, across a seminal generation in Irish politics. The narrative centres on an established local Fenian tradition and its relationship with Devlinite Hibernianism, from co-operation, to overt confrontation, to a power struggle within the Irish Volunteer movement, to the Fenians' prominent role in Sinn Féin's meteoric rise in the aftermath of the Easter Rising. Fenians and Ribbonmen will be essential reading for those interested in Irish history and politics. ;

Markets and power in digital capitalism

        by Philipp Staab

Today's global capitalism runs through digital networks. Its leaders are internet giants such as Google, Apple, Amazon and Tencent. Their technologies are ubiquitous: we carry high-performance computers around in our pockets, manage our lives in the cloud and display them on social media. They have also literally privatised the market, transforming capitalism in the process. Philipp Staab takes us on a virtual tour of modern digital capitalism. He shows how digital surveillance and evaluation practices have proliferated throughout the economy, exacerbating social inequality in the process. What is specific to digital capitalism, Staab argues, is the emergence of 'proprietary markets'. In the past the focus was on producing things and selling them at a profit. Today the meta-platforms extract their profits by owning the market itself.
