        The Simons of Manchester

        How one family shaped a city and a nation

        by Martin Dodge, John Ayshford, Diana Leitch, Stuart Jones, Janet Wolff

        The Simons of Manchester revives the history of one of Manchester's most influential families, the Simons. The book investigates the lives and public work of Henry and Emily Simon, and Ernest and Shena Simon. Through philanthropy and work in social reform, the two generations of the Simons greatly enriched Manchester's cultural and civic institutions, worked to improve the lives of its citizens, and helped to spearhead profound national reforms in health, housing, planning and education. While many people in Manchester are familiar with the Simon name through Shena Simon College, Simonsway, and the Simon Building at the University of Manchester, there is scant public knowledge of who the Simons were and their legacy. As such, this edited volume of collected essays aims to illuminate their fascinating lives and public service to rehabilitate the Simons and examine their local and national significance.

        The Strategy of Rescue

        The past and present of a power-political concept

        by Johannes F. Lehmann

        "Rescue” has two fundamentally different “existential” dimensions. One is aimed at “saving” individual lives that are in danger. Firefighters, for instance, rescue people from fires, while the sea rescue services rescue shipwrecked people from the Mediterranean. The second dimension of “rescue”, on the other hand, concerns systems – think of the bailing out of banks, the euro or the climate disaster – and so points to a larger context that creates the conditions for “life” to even be possible, or at least to be preserved. The complex subject of this stringent essay is just to what extent politics enable or prevent “rescue attempts”, to what extent it understands its actions as “rescue actions”, and how decisively the “narrative”, i.e. the “talk of rescue”, ultimately dominates our entire understanding of politics.

        Schema Therapy

        by Jacob, Gitta; Arntz, Arnoud

        Schema therapy is an important further development of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for patients with personality disorders and other chronic mental health problems. In studies, work with the schema mode approach in particular has been shown to be highly effective. In the updated edition of this book, which in particular also reports current findings on the evidence, treatment with the mode model is presented in a practical manner. Numerous case examples illustrate the therapeutic approach. After an introduction to the core concepts of schema therapy, diagnostic and case conceptualization are addressed. Subsequently, the therapeutic procedure for each mode type is explained. Important emphasis is placed on the therapeutic relationship, which is conceptualized as a limited reparenting, and emotion-focusing techniques, such as chair dialogues and imaginative techniques. In these two respects, schema therapy differs particularly from classical CBT. Typical pitfalls and problems in schema therapy as well as possible variations of the approach are also described. Thus, the book offers a compact presentation of work with the schema approach to personality disorders. For:• psychotherapists• psychiatrists• clinical psychologists• students and teachers in psychotherapeutictraining, furthertraining, and continuing education

        Outline

        Roman | Eine weibliche Odyssee im 21. Jahrhundert

        by Rachel Cusk, Eva Bonné

        Outline ist ein so wagemutiger wie eleganter Roman über Liebe, Verlust, Erinnerung und den elementaren Drang, den anderen und sich selbst Geschichten zu erzählen. Eine Schriftstellerin reist im Hochsommer nach Athen, um dort einen Schreibkurs zu geben. Während ihre eigenen Verhältnisse vorerst im Dunkeln bleiben, wird sie zur Zuhörerin einer Reihe von Lebensgeschichten und -beichten. Beginnend mit dem Sitznachbarn auf dem Hinflug, seinen Schilderungen von schnellen Booten und gescheiterten Ehen, erzählen ihre Bekanntschaften von Ängsten, Begierden, Versäumnissen und Lieblingstheorien. In der erstickenden Hitze und dem Lärm der Stadt erschaffen diese verschiedenen Stimmen ein komplexes Tableau menschlichen Lebens. Und dabei wird, zunächst in Umrissen, zugleich das Bild einer Frau – der Schriftstellerin – kenntlich, die zu lernen beginnt, einem einschneidenden Verlust zu begegnen.

        Using Europe: territorial party strategies in a multi-level system

        by Eve Hepburn

        This book explores how regional political parties use Europe to advance their territorial projects in times of rapid state restructuring. It examines the ways in which decentralization and supranational integration have encouraged regional parties to pursue their strategies across multiple territorial levels. This book constitutes the first attempt to unravel the complexities of how nationalist and statewide parties manoeuvre around the twin issues of European integration and decentralization, and exploit the shifting linkages within multi-level political systems. In a detailed comparative examination of three cases - Scotland, Bavaria and Sardinia - over a thirty-year period, the book explores how integration has altered the nature of territorial party competition and identifies the limits of Europe for territorial projects. In addressing these issues, this work moves beyond present scholarship on multi-level governance to explain the diversity of regional responses to Europe. By providing important new insights and empirical research on the conduct of territorial party politics, and an innovative model of territorial mobilization in Europe, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of comparative politics, European studies, regionalism and federalism, political parties and devolution. ;

        At the Very Bottom of the System

        How migrant workers ensure prosperity for us

        by Sascha Lübbe

        The author reveals structural problems and offers solutions – an urgently necessary book, not least with a view to the acute shortage of skilled workers 450,000 migrant workers toll on German construction sites, work in sometimes inhumane conditions in meat factories or as truck drivers, and let’s not forget the hordes of cleaners in German hotels and companies. They are systematically exploited and cheated out of their wages. Sascha Lübbe exposes the octopus-like network of partly criminal companies in a shadowy world where the boundary between the legal and the illegal is blurred. In his evocative book with interviews with those aff ected, he reveals how a parallel system has established itself in the German working world, but also how those affected resist.

        The UK financial system

        4th Edition

        by Mike Buckle, John Thompson

        Substantially revised and updated, this fourth edition of The UK financial system presents a comprehensive explanation of the workings of the institutions and markets which make up the UK financial system, and discusses the issues affecting them. It presents key theoretical developments such as asymmetric information, the efficient markets hypothesis, behavioural economics and the term structure of interest rates, thus providing an analytical framework to aid understanding of the institutional structure. Several case studies are provided throughout the book looking at the failure of various financial firms and the lessons that can be learned from these. Examples include Equitable Life, Barings Bank, the Bank of International Credit and Commerce (BCCI) and Long Term Capital Management. ;

        Organisation als System

        Aufsätze

        by Dirk Baecker

        Die hier gesammelten Aufsätze erkunden die Möglichkeiten der Organisationstheorie, einem Selbstverständnis der modernen Gesellschaft entgegenzukommen, das von der Organisation nicht mehr nur die Umsetzung guter Absichten, sondern die Diagnose relevanter Problemstellungen erwartet. Die Organisation ist dann nicht mehr die rationale Maschine mit irrationalen Sonderleistungen, sondern ein soziales System mit eigenen Absichten und Beschränkungen.

        Unfit for heroes

        Reconstruction and soldier settlement in the empire between the wars

        by Kent Fedorowich

        Research on soldier settlement has to be set within the wider history of emigration and immigration. This book examines two parallel but complementary themes: the settlement of British soldiers in the overseas or 'white' dominions, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, between 1915 and 1930. One must place soldier settlement within the larger context of imperial migration prior to 1914 in order to elicit the changes in attitude and policy which occurred after the armistice. The book discusses the changes to Anglo-dominion relations that were consequent upon the incorporation of British ex-service personnel into several overseas soldier settlement programmes, and unravels the responses of the dominion governments to such programmes. For instance, Canadians and Australians complained about the number of ex-imperials who arrived physically unfit and unable to undertake employment of any kind. The First World War made the British government to commit itself to a free passage scheme for its ex-service personnel between 1914 and 1922. The efforts of men such as L. S. Amery who attempted to establish a landed imperial yeomanry overseas is described. Anglicisation was revived in South Africa after the second Anglo-Boer War, and politicisation of the country's soldier settlement was an integral part of the larger debate on British immigration to South Africa. The Australian experience of resettling ex-servicemen on the land after World War I came at a great social and financial cost, and New Zealand's disappointing results demonstrated the nation's vulnerability to outside economic factors.

        Die Rhetorik in Hitlers »Mein Kampf« und andere Essays zur Strategie der Überredung

        Aus dem Amerikanischen übersetzt von Günter Rebing

        by Kenneth Burke, Günter Rebing

        Der Titelessay entstand in den späten dreißiger Jahren; er demontierte, der Geschichtsschreibung vorgreifend, die Legende, daß dem Zeitgenossen der Nationalsozialismus sich als Naturkatastrophe dargestellt habe, deren Ursachen und Ablauf sich nicht hätten erkennen lassen. Burkes Studie beweist das Gegenteil. Zu einer Zeit, da die halbe Welt nicht viel mehr als Unbehagen an Hitlers Politik empfand, beschrieb der amerikanische Kritiker das quasimagische Wahnsystem der »braunen Bewegung« und ihre sozialen Mechanismen. – Unser Band enthält ferner Aufsätze Burkes zur Strategie der Überredung, des »Entlarvens« und der poetischen Benennung.
