Dreihundert deutsche Männer, schrieb Walther Rathenau zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, bestimmten die wirtschaftlichen Geschicke des Kontinents. Er meinte das enge Geflecht aus Bankiers, Industriekapitänen und Lobbyisten, das sich mit dem Aufstieg von Firmen wie der Allianz, Krupp oder Siemens herausgebildet hatte. Man kannte einander, man sprach miteinander – und man sprach sich ab. Bis in die 1990er Jahre prägte dieses Netzwerk namens »Deutschland AG« die Politik und die Unternehmenskultur in der Bundesrepublik. Konstantin Richter montiert die Geschichten dieser Macher und Magnaten zu einer temporeichen szenischen Erzählung. In meisterhaft arrangierten Episoden lässt er ihre Welt zu unserer werden: Er begleitet Nicolaus Otto und Gottlieb Daimler bei der Gemüseernte, wo die beiden genauso erbittert konkurrieren wie bei der Entwicklung neuer Motoren. Richter sitzt mit am Tisch, wenn die Gebrüder Mannesmann in Marokko irrwitzige Intrigen spinnen, und er pendelt mit Thomas Middelhoff von Bielefeld nach Essen, wenn dieser sich mit seinem Hubschrauber auf den Weg ins Büro macht. So entsteht ein einzigartiges Epos, das rund 150 Jahre umspannt: von der Start-up-Nation Kaiserreich bis in die krisengebeutelte Gegenwart, vom Aufstieg der Deutschland AG bis zum ihrem Niedergang.

In Die Mitbürger geraten gebildete, soziale Menschen, die von sich selbst sagen würden, ihnen wäre jeder Extremismus »ob links oder rechts« zuwider, in Situationen, in denen sich unmerklich Verschiebungen mitten im vermeintlich Normalen vollziehen – ein Psychogramm des Extremismus der Mitte. Written by two leading scholars of contemporary United States and Chinese foreign policies in the Global South, Aid for Dominance offers a pioneering, theoretically conscious, and empirically rich account of the two great powers' grand strategies in the global development sector. Vernacular theology and apocrypha in the medieval North Sea

In the Middle Ages, hell was useful because it was vaguely defined. Canonical scriptures scarcely mention hell, leaving much to the imaginations of early Christians, who used it to sort out who belonged within the faith. This book explores how hell became a place for literary experiments with local challenges in theology and identity. Following the reception and transformations of two popular hell apocrypha, it argues that they served as this role because of their liminal textual authority. As noncanonical scriptures, apocrypha afforded medieval writers space to revise their hells (since they were not actually scripture), while also encouraging readers to revere those experiments as valid (since they seemed like scripture). The book brings together adaptations from early medieval England, Iceland, Ireland, and Wales, placing the early vernacular theologies of the North Sea in comparative conversation.

Fuckability, orgasm gap and #metoo

Lust, a mortal sin? These times are over. In today's public perception, it is more likely for a boring sex life to be categorised as that. In statistical terms, people have never had as little sex with each other as they do today. And yet tips for a good sex life are to be found on every (digital) corner. Sex has mutated into a lifestyle product, and terms like 'fuckability' and 'MILF' trip lightly off our tongues. Henriette Hell takes a closer look at the thing about sex. She traces the history and genesis of 'sexual liberation', and sheds light on the 'cheating gene' and the #metoo debate. The author asks (and answers) the question of whether sex is becoming more and more antisocial and what actually still turns us on today. In doing so, she focuses on the former mortal sin of lust, which is inseparably linked to the systematic suppression of female lust (and its liberation).

This book represents the first ever comprehensive study of the EU's foreign and security policy in Bosnia. Drawing on a wealth of fresh empirical material, it demonstrates that institutions are a key variable in explaining levels of common foreign security policy (CFSP) coherence and effectiveness over time. In doing so, it also sheds new light on the role that intergovernmental, bureaucratic and local political contestation have played in the formulation and implementation of a European foreign policy. The study concludes that the EU's involvement in Bosnia has not only had a significant impact on this Balkan country in its path from stabilisation to integration, but has also transformed the EU, its foreign and security policy and shaped the development of the EU's international identity along the way. The book will be of great interest to researchers and students of EU politics, International Relations and Bosnian politics. ;

Sir Frank Roberts and the making of British foreign policy, 1930-68

Over four decades as a diplomat, Sir Frank Roberts dealt with headline issues, including policy towards Germany during the years of appeasement, the Second World War alliance with the Soviet Union, the origins of the Cold War, NATO affairs, the Berlin and Cuban Missile Crises, European integration, and relations with the Federal Republic of Germany. Collaborating with the renowned American diplomat, George F. Kennan (the cryptonymous author 'X' of an influential 1947 article), his despatches from Moscow in 1946 shaped Britain's Cold War strategy. In 1954 he played an integral part in the diplomacy behind the rearmament of the Federal Republic and her incorporation into NATO, helping to build an enduring structure of transatlantic security. Roberts' career sheds new light on British foreign policy across an era in which Britain slipped from global pre-eminence to regional power status.
