        Worlds of the ring

Nation and empire in the British and German circus

        by Sabine Hanke

Worlds of the Ring is a groundbreaking exploration of the interwar European circus scene, focusing on the German Sarrasani and British Bertram W. Mills' circuses. This study illuminates the correlation between the circus's evolution and imperialism/nationalism, revealing how these enterprises shaped national identities for popular audiences. Examining the years 1918-45, the book takes a transnational perspective, uncovering the interplay of international and national forces that influenced the modern circus. Through case studies, it delves into the lives of individuals in the industry, using diverse sources like newspapers, legal documents, and performer archives. The book introduces the concept of Orientalism to analyse how circuses depicted foreign worlds, and provides a fresh perspective on interwar popular culture, globalising forces, and the circus's ties to European imperialism in the early 20th century.

        by Regula Everts, Barbara Ritter

Memo is a circus elephant who lives in Switzerland, but because it is too cold for him there, he wants to return to his home country of Botswana. Target Group: parents; teachers; social workers specializing in education; school psychological and medical services; psychiatric services for children; student teachers The memory training program with Memo the elephant is based on neuroscientific principles and has been developed, used, and successfully tested at the University Children’s Hospital in Bern, Switzerland. The program focuses on teaching effective memory strategies and improves the working memory. Its six simple units have been shown to produce sustainable improvement in learning in children from the age of seven. Memo Training is the product of a major research project conducted at the Inselspital in Bern by the neuropsychologists PD Dr. Regula Everts and Dr. Barbara Ritter.

        Coping Better with Cancer Therapy

Improved quality of life with the right vitamins and minerals

by Uwe Gröber and Prof. Dr. Klaus Kisters

Cancer patients often suffer from malnutrition. Not only do they lack energy-providing macronutrients such as protein, fats and carbohydrates, they particularly lack the micronutrients that regulate the metabolism. Micronutrients such as vitamin D, selenium, L-carnitine, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin C significantly contribute to supporting the immune system of cancer patients, reducing inflammatory processes, alleviating the side effects of cancer therapy, and improving their quality of life. This patient guide provides information about the relationship between cancer, malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, the influence of cancer therapeutics on micronutrient balance, and how cancer patients can support their therapy and improve their quality of life with a controlled intake of micronutrient

        Assemblages of cancer

Experiences and contexts of breast cancer in the UK, France and Italy

        by Cinzia Greco

Assemblages of cancer illustrates the tensions in the experiences and context of breast cancer in Western Europe. Breast cancer is presented as a success story in oncology, especially in countries with advanced, universal healthcare systems. At the same time, individual experiences are shaped by uncertainty, local variability of healthcare provisions, and the need for patients to assemble information about the treatments, knowledge on healthcare systems navigation, and different processes of meaning-making to manage the uncertainty and variability characterising individual outcomes. The book explores both how individual bodies and experiences are transformed by different local medical practices, institutions and discourses of breast cancer and how patients need to find their own way in these contexts. Assemblages of cancer is based on ten years of ethnographic work with patients and medical professionals in the UK, France and Italy.

        Popular cinema in Brazil, 1930–2001

        by Stephanie Dennison, Lisa Shaw

Brazil has one of the most significant and productive film industries in Latin America. This ground-breaking study provides an entertaining insight into the Brazilian films that have most captured the imagination of domestic audiences over the years. The recent international success of films such as Central Station and City of God, has stimulated widespread interest in Brazilian film, but studies written in English focus on the 'auteur' cinema of the 1960s. This book focuses on individual films in their socio-historical context, drawing on extensive fieldwork in Brazil and Latin America. It argues that Brazilian cinema has almost always been grounded in intrinsically home-grown cultural forms, dating back to the nineteenth century, such as the Brazilian music-hall, the travelling circus, radio shows, carnival, and, later, comedy television. Combining a chronological structure with groundbreaking research and a lively approach, Popular cinema in Brazil is the ideal introduction to Brazilian cinema.
