        Empty Mind

        by John Cage, Marie Luise Knott, Walter Zimmermann

        »In welchem Käfig man sich auch befindet, man muß ihn verlassen«, lautete das Credo von John Cage (1912 bis 1992), dem international bekanntesten experimentellen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Weniger bekannt ist sein literarisches Werk, das gleichberechtigt neben dem musikalischen steht. Cage ließ sich von Erik Satie, Robert Rauschenberg, James Joyce, Merce Cunningham und Marcel Duchamp inspirieren − verwandten Geistern, mit denen er Zeit seines Lebens täglich umging. Indem er seine poetisch-philosphischen Versuche musikalischen Verfahren unterwarf, verwandelte er Vorträge über das Komponieren, über den Zufall oder die Kategorie der Unbestimmtheit in Ereignisse, schwebend, der Festlegung entzogen – nicht anders als die Musik der Absichtslosigkeit, von der er träumte. John Cage als Wortkünstler harrt hierzulande noch der Entdeckung. »Empty Mind« versammelt eine Auswahl poetischer Schlüsseltexte, an denen sich die unerschöpfliche Freude, neue Wege zu gehen, Grenzen zu überschreiten, ablesen läßt. Eine Freude, die ansteckend wirkt − auch auf all jene, die sich noch nie mit seinem Werk beschäftigt haben.

        Doubtful and dangerous

        The question of succession in late Elizabethan England

        by Susan Doran, Peter Lake, Paulina Kewes, Anthony Milton, Jason Peacey, Alexandra Gajda

        Doubtful and dangerous examines the pivotal influence of the succession question on the politics, religion and culture of the post-Armada years of Queen Elizabeth's reign. Although the earlier Elizabethan succession controversy has long commanded scholarly attention, the later period has suffered from relative obscurity. This book remedies the situation. Taking a thematic and interdisciplinary approach, individual essays demonstrate that key late Elizabethan texts - literary, political and polemical - cannot be understood without reference to the succession. The essays also reveal how the issue affected court politics, lay at the heart of religious disputes, stimulated constitutional innovation, and shaped foreign relations. By situating the topic within its historiographical and chronological contexts, the editors offer a novel account of the whole reign. Interdisciplinary in scope and spanning the crucial transition from the Tudors to the Stuarts, the book will be indispensable to scholars and students of early modern British and Irish history, literature and religion. ;

        Art as worldmaking

        Critical essays on realism and naturalism

        by Malcolm Baker, Andrew Hemingway, Andrew Hemingway, Briony Fer, Joshua Shannon, Adrian Rifkin, Malcolm Baker, Martina Droth, Caroline Arscott, Anne Wagner, Martin Powers, Neil McWilliam, Celeste Brusati, T.J. Clark, Rebecca Zurier, Steve Edwards, Tamar Garb, Lisa Tickner, Alistair Rider, Thomas Crow, Gail Day

        Art as worldmaking is a response to Alex Potts's provocative 2013 book Experiments in modern realism. Twenty essays by leading scholars test Potts's recasting of realism through examinations of art produced in different media and periods, ranging from eighth-century Chinese garden aesthetics to video work by the contemporary Russian collective Radek Community. While the book does not neglect avatars of pictorial realism such as Menzel and Eakins, or the question of nineteenth-century realism's historical antecedents, it is contemporary in orientation in that many contributors are particularly concerned with the questions that sculpture, photography and non-traditional media pose for realism as an aesthetic norm. It will be essential reading for students of art history concerned with art's truth value or more broadly with conceptual problems of representation and the intersections of art and politics.
