The Little Honey Bee and Friends

        by Friederun Reichenstetter/ Hans-Günther Döring

Bees, butterflies, ladybirds! So many insects are out and about in our native meadows. This puzzle book is full of little informative texts, animal stickers and pictures to colour in which not only educate but also promote early awareness about the environment and conservation. The pedagogical concept works through age-appropriate tasks and a clear structure: true-to-nature picture book illustrations on the left-hand side with a short factual text that can be read aloud or independently, plus a quiz question, then on the right-hand side are stickers and a puzzle to colour in. Testing knowledge is good. But this goes further: encouraging children to be inquisitive and imaginative about nature. At the end each animal sticker book with the little honey bee will look different. However you want it to be.

How Animals Hammer, Drill and Strike

Tool Use in the Animal Kingdom

        by Peter-René Becker

From insects to fish as well as birds and primates: the use of tools is amazingly widespread in the animal kingdom. It’s a misnomer to presume that humans are distinguished by tool use and conscious capacity. So where is culture initiated? The biologist Peter-René Becker has evaluated numerous studies and cites plenty of evidence for the use of the hammer and anvil, lances, bait or sponges. Animals also use “tools as social implements”. Ultimately, the depth of man’s conscience singles him out from other animals.

        Instead of modernity

The Western canon and the incorporation of the Hispanic (c. 1850–75)

        by Andrew Ginger

Instead of modernity goes to the very heart of comparative cultural study: the question of what happens when intimate, dynamic connections are made over place and time, what it is to feel at home amid the lavish diversity of culture. This ambitious interdisciplinary book reconsiders foundational figures of the modern western canon, from Darwin to Cameron, Baudelaire to Whistler. It weaves together brain images from France, preserved insects from the Americas, glass in London, poetry from Argentina, paintings from Spain. Flaubert, Whitman, and Nietzsche find themselves with Hostos from Puerto Rico and Gorriti from Argentina. The book ranges over theoretical fields: trauma and sexuality studies, theories of visuality, the philosophy of sacrifice and intimacy, the thought of Wittgenstein. Instead of modernity is an adventure in the practice of comparative writing: resonances join suggestively over place and time, the textures of words, phrases and images combine to form moods.

        Paul and the Red Balloon

A Book for Children Who Want to Become Courageous and Find New Friends

by Franziska Meister, Felix Hamacher, Stephan Weingarten

The story is about Paul, who feels very lonely and has no real friends. He spends his time playing with beetles and other insects and is not comfortable asking other children if they want to play with him. He thinks of himself as boring and believes that the other children find him rather peculiar. A red balloon changes his attitude and makes him dare to do things he had never thought possible. The aim of this book is to make it easier for affected children to understand their current situation. They are taught that they are not alone and how to overcome their fears. The book provides parents, siblings and therapists of children who have social anxiety with  important information about the emotional disorder along with practical tasks and  exercises.   For: • children (ages 6–12) who suffer from the fear of isolation• parents, relatives• therapists
