        Hermann Hesse – Alfred Kubin. Briefwechsel 1928-1952

        Gegensätzlichere Naturelle lassen sich kaum denken als der von den Dämonien der Natur und des Menschen angezogene Maler und Zeichner Alfred Kubin (1877–1959) und Hermann Hesse (1877–1962), der ebendiese Kräfte in seinen Erzählungen und Gedichten zu bändigen versuchte. Doch war es das Kraftfeld gerade dieser Unterschiede, das sie zusammengeführt hat. Beide waren Außenseiter, die in selbstgewählter Zurückgezogenheit weitab vom zeitgemäßen Kulturbetrieb gelebt und produziert haben und die Jahre des Nationalsozialismus in Repression und finanzieller Not erlebten: Hermann Hesse im Tessin in Montagnola, Alfred Kubin im österreichischen Zwickledt bei Wernstein am Inn.

        Making sense of the Bayeux Tapestry

        This book aims to make sense of the Bayeux Tapestry by bringing together answers to a number of questions which this famous hanging presents to the viewer. How did the embroiderers organise the stitching of the Bayeux Tapestry? Are its limited colours used with greater sophistication than viewers have recognised? What do we know of the Tapestry's supporting cast: naked figures in the margins and clerics present at events in the main register? Can we learn anything about the original purpose of the Tapestry from detailed examination of Bayeux Cathedral's 1476 Inventory, the first known reference to the Tapestry's existence? This book combines up-to-the-minute research with an introduction that draws on the contributors' personal observations in order to interrogate the Tapestry's enduring value. Bringing together contributions from leading specialists and newer voices in the field, it will be essential reading for students and scholars of the Bayeux Tapestry, medieval art and culture. ;

        Citizen Manchester

        In 2008, Manchester decided to embark on a counter-cyclical project, much as the city fathers had done in the last great recession, and invest significantly in two civic buildings, two buildings that were cornerstones of the making of the first modern industrialised city: Manchester Town Hall Extension and Manchester Central Library. Early on in this major redevelopment project, artists Dan Dubowitz and Alan Ward were given privileged and open access to witness this transformational period in the life of these two iconic buildings. Through large-format photographs and interviews taken and conducted over a period of eighteen months, they captured the moment when the city's citizens and workers had been locked out and the spaces were being stripped bare; revealing both a glimpse of what they had been and what they might become. The artwork provides insights on the reciprocal relationship between people and place, and reveals how the refurbishment of a building can go far beyond physical refurbishment, questioning the relationships between a city, its citizens and place.

So unterschiedlich die beiden Schriftsteller in Naturell, Schreibvorstellungen und Selbstverständnis sein mögen, ihr sich daraus entspinnender Briefwechsel offenbart eine unverbrüchliche Verbindung von Schreibtisch zu Schreibtisch. Als Lesende können wir teilhaben am Entstehungsprozeß ihrer Bücher - Lenz arbeitet an seinen autobiographischen Eugen-Rapp-Romanen, Handke tritt fast jedes Jahr mit einem neuen Buch hervor - und an ihren Lebensumständen, ihrem Alltag. Sie teilen die Schwierigkeiten, die sie mit den "Wirklichkeitsmenschen" haben, und die Liebe zum Gehen im Freien, zu Landschaften, zur Natur. Im Mai 1981 schreibt Handke: "Hier ist ein wunderbarer Tag, und ich saß bis jetzt fast nur draußen und versuchte, sein Berichterstatter zu sein." In Hermann Lenz hat er einen Vertrauten gefunden.         Over the last twenty years there have been flurries of interest in the artist's model, and recent exhibitions have stimulated new activity in this area. Model and Supermodel extends the discussion about the social and cultural significance of the model in British art and culture. A fascinating collection of essays and interviews, it examines the persistent mythology of the artist's model and some of the ambiguities involved in depicting the body. The volume begins with Martin Postle's survey of the profession of the model during the period c.1840-1940. Elizabeth Prettejohn considers the Pre-Raphaelite model and Alison Smith examines the lives of some nineteenth-century models who achieved fame and notoriety in their own right. Jane Desmarais looks at the model from a literary perspective and Reena Suleman presents the work of Edward Linley Sambourne. Michael Hatt's essay examines the aesthetic and ethical aspects of Tuke's use of boy models for his paintings of nude bathers, and William Vaughan reflects on the British figurative tradition from Sickert to Freud. Catherine Wood brings the volume up to date with her essay on the found model in contemporary art, and the volume concludes with two interviews with the artist, Peter Blake, and a life model, Susannah Gregory. The book offers a series of lively takes on the phenomenon of the artist's model. It will make fascinating reading for those interested in modern art and the wider aspects of British culture and society.

        The Elements of Drawing

        Can drawing — sound, honest representation of the world as the eye sees it, not tricks with the pencil or a few "effects" — be learned from a book? One of the most gifted draftsmen, who is also one of the greatest art critics and theorists of all time, answers that question with a decided "Yes." He is John Ruskin, the author of this book, a classic in art education as well as a highly effective text for the student and amateur today. The work is in three parts, cast in the form of letters to a student, successively covering "First Practice," "Sketching from Nature," and "Colour and Composition." Starting with the bare fundamentals (what kind of drawing pen to buy; shading a square evenly), and using the extremely practical method of exercises which the student performs from the very first, Ruskin instructs, advises, guides, counsels, and anticipates problems with sensitivity. The exercises become more difficult, developing greater and greater skills until Ruskin feels his reader is ready for watercolors and finally composition, which he treats in detail as to the laws of principality, repetition, continuity, curvature, radiation, contrast, interchange, consistency, and harmony. All along the way, Ruskin explains, in plain, clear language, the artistic and craftsmanlike reasons behind his practical advice — underlying which, of course, is Ruskin's brilliant philosophy of honest, naturally observed art which has so much affected our aesthetic. Three full-page plates and 48 woodcuts and diagrams (the latter from drawings by the author) show the student what the text describes. An appendix devotes many pages to the art works which may be studied with profit.
