From India to Germany:What My Father's Journey Tells Usabout Migration and the Kindness ofStrangers
by Sunita Sukhana
— An extraordinary story of migration — Contemporary history of the 70s and backgrounds to India, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, the former Yugoslavia, the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany He was the son of the Sikh priest, a successful 400-meter runner and, eventually, a migrant. In 1979, Bagicha Singh turned his back on his homeland and set off with a head full of dreams on the long, turbulent overland journey from India to Germany. It was the year the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and the Islamic Revolution raged in Iran. A year whose aftermath continues to shape the world to this day. More than 40 years later, his daughter tells the story of Bagicha's adventurous journey. The result is a touching document on origin, contemporary history, and the meaning of migration.

Biography & True StoriesFebruary 2025Unburied
The true story of Hannah Beswick, the Manchester Mummy
by Hannah Priest
The macabre tale of an eighteenth-century woman immortalised in folklore as the 'Manchester Mummy'. In 1835, the Manchester Natural History Society opened the doors of its museum. Taking pride of place in its collection were three mummies: one was Egyptian, one was Peruvian and one was a woman from Cheetham Hill. This is the first time the true story of Hannah Beswick, the so-called 'Manchester Mummy', has been told. Over the years, explanations for the Manchester Mummy have ranged from the chilling - Hannah's fear of being buried alive - to the downright bizarre - the legend of her buried gold - but the truth is more complex. Exploring this fascinating episode from museum history, Unburied sheds light on the Victorian turn to the macabre and changing attitudes to the display of human remains. It debunks the legends and asks what Hannah Beswick can tell us about death and dying, mummies and museums.

MedicineNovember 2019Migrant architects of the NHS
South Asian doctors and the reinvention of British general practice (1940s-1980s)
by Julian Simpson, Keir Waddington
Migrant architects of the NHS draws on forty-five oral history interviews and extensive archival research to offer a radical reappraisal of how the National Health Service was made. It tells the story of migrant South Asian doctors who became general practitioners in the NHS. Imperial legacies, professional discrimination and an exodus of UK-trained doctors combined to direct these doctors towards work as GPs in some of the most deprived parts of the UK. In some areas, they made up over half of the general practitioner workforce. The NHS was structurally dependent on them and they shaped British society and medicine through their agency. Aimed at students and academics with interests in the history of immigration, immigration studies, the history of medicine, South Asian studies and oral history. It will also be of interest to anyone who wants to know more about how Empire and migration have contributed to making Britain what it is today.

2024The second half of your life - a manual
Tips and strategies for successful ageing
by Dr. Petra Kiedaisch
In the middle of our lives, the cards are reshuffled: marriages are divorced, careers are questioned, friendships are ended, questions of meaning are asked, bodies change - and not just hormonally. At the same time, children leave home and parents become carers. From the age of 45, the majority of our population is at the centre of a second upheaval that affects all facets of our lives and leaves us at a loss in many ways. Not only in our daily lives, but also when it comes to planning for our own old age. This guide is designed to help us find our way. It presents the most important information from all areas relevant to a good life after 45. Leading experts from the fields of medicine, nutrition, philosophy, theology, psychology, care, law and finance give recommendations on what to look out for and what tools are needed to get through these challenging years unscathed. Useful checklists round off the articles. The book shows us the unique opportunity to see these challenges not as a crisis but as a source of strength. Not only can we come through this period of our lives healthy and happy, but we can also shape it so that the next age threshold is no longer frightening. During the second phase of adolescence, we lay the foundations for whether and how we will grow older. Be it in terms of health or living together with family and friends. With contributions from: Prof. Dr. Martin Gessmann (philosophy), Dipl. Psych. Claudia Kühner (psychology), Dr Suso Lederle (medicine), Dr Petra Forster (nutrition), Christian Hald, Anja Heine (law), Prof Dr Philipp Schreiber (finance), Prof Dr Thomas Klie (nursing care insurance), Georg Eberhardt (religion).

2023Formularium paediatricum
Prescriptions for children in paediatric practice
by Edited by Dr. Andreas S. Ziegler, Nadine Metzger and Prof. Dr. Dagmar Fischer. In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Peter Langguth, Dr. Stefan Seyferth and Dr. Norbert Ohem
When children are ill, there is often a lack of suitable proprietary medicines. With experience and expertise, pharmacies close this gap. In the process, they are often confronted with complex questions before preparing a medicine: Is the dosage right? Which dosage form will be accepted by the child? How do I process the active ingredient in a child-friendly way? Which excipients are suitable? Formularium paediatricum provides answers to these and numerous other questions: ■ 70 monographs on tested standard formulations describe the preparation process step-by-step and explain paediatric specifics in terms of formulation. ■ an annotated list of common paediatric excipients as well as comprehensive explanations for evaluating children‘s formulations help to assess unknown, non-standardised formulations. Whenever it is a case of extemporaneous medicines for children: the Formularium paediatricum assists in the preparation in the pharmacy to succeed safely and confidently.

Doctors fnd themselves caught between the growing demands of having to learn more and more plus physical and mental stress, and the needs of a fulflling private life. Previously, there was no selfhelp guide focused on how to effectively improve the wellbeing of physicians (and patients). Over the course of their careers, physicians often lose momentum, become exhausted and subsequently lack meaning in their life. This can even culminate in burnout. To prevent this, it is important to continually refocus, adapting your goals to circumstances. With this in mind, time management for physicians becomes more than just normal planning.
