        Folklore

        A journey through the past and present

        by Owen Davies, Ceri Houlbrook

        A gripping guide to the weird yet everyday world of British folklore. In this ground-breaking book, two leading experts provide the definitive guide to British folklore past and present. Owen Davies and Ceri Houlbrook explore folklore in all its remarkable variations, from village rituals and fairy tales to UFO legends and internet fanfiction. Travelling through a landscape of witches, wizards and wicker men, they reveal how folklore has been researched and written about in the past and show how it continues to be lived in the present. At the same time, they provide the reader with a valuable toolkit for understanding how to interpret the diverse examples given. The book's key message is that folklore is much more than the fossilised remains of a distant, rural past. Folklore is and always has been ubiquitous, dynamic and political. It is a living tradition that draws from many sources, including migrant communities, and is forever being renewed and updated.

        Über die Seele

        by Katja Crone, Robert Schnepf, Jürgen Stolzenberg

        Die philosophische Frage nach der Seele gehört zu den ältesten und zugleich aktuellsten Themen der Philosophie. Bis heute ist keineswegs geklärt, was das Seelische bzw. Geistige ausmacht und wie es sich zum Physischen verhält. Dies belegen die gegenwärtigen Kontroversen zwischen Neurowissenschaft und Philosophie über menschliche Willensfreiheit. Der Band präsentiert die wirkungsmächtigsten Positionen zum Begriff der Seele von der Antike bis zur Neuzeit und diskutiert darüber hinaus aktuelle Problemlagen der Bewußtseinsphilosophie. Alle Beiträge stammen von international renommierten Spezialisten, richten sich aber dezidiert an ein breiteres Publikum. So bietet der Band zugleich einen Beitrag zur aktuellen Debatte um Geist und Gehirn und eine fundierte Einführung in das Thema.

        The Witch of Edmonton

        by William Rowley, Thomas Dekker and John Ford

        by Peter Corbin, David Bevington, Douglas Sedge

        The Witch of Edmonton has received considerable attention recently both from scholars and critics interested in witchcraft practices and also from the directors in the theatre. The play, based on a sensational witchcraft trial of 1621, presents Mother Sawyer and her local community in the grip of a witch-mania reflecting popular belief and superstition of the time. This edition offers a thorough reconsideration of the text with a complete transcription of the original pamphlet by Henry Goodcole. This edition will be of particular interest not only to students of Renaissance Drama but also of the cultural history of the seventeenth century.. Open University adopted text (for their new Renaissance Drama module). ;

        Witchcraft narratives in Germany

        Rothenburg, 1561–1652

        by Joseph Bergin, Alison Rowlands, Penny Roberts, William G. Naphy

        Looks at why witch-trials failed to gain momentum and escalate into 'witch-crazes' in certain parts of early modern Europe. Exames the rich legal records of the German city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a city which experienced a very restrained pattern of witch-trials and just one execution for witchcraft between 1561 and 1652. Explores the social and psychological conflicts that lay behind the making of accusations and confessions of witchcraft. Offers insights into other areas of early modern life, such as experiences of and beliefs about communal conflict, magic, motherhood, childhood and illness. Offers a critique of existing explanations for the gender bias of witch-trials, and a new explanation as to why most witches were women.
