        Syria and the chemical weapons taboo

        Exploiting the forbidden

        by Michelle Bentley

        This book analyses the Syria crisis and the role of chemical weapons in relation to US foreign policy. The Syrian government's use of such weapons and their subsequent elimination has dominated the US response to the conflict, where these are viewed as particularly horrific arms - a repulsion known as the chemical taboo. On the surface, this would seem to be an appropriate reaction: these are nasty weapons and eradicating them would ostensibly comprise a 'good' move. But this book reveals two new aspects of the taboo that challenge this prevailing view. First, actors use the taboo strategically to advance their own self-interested policy objectives. Second, that applying the taboo to Syria has actually exacerbated the crisis. As such, this book not only provides a timely analysis of Syria, but also a major and original rethink of the chemical taboo, as well as international norms more widely.

        Intertextuality in modern Arabic literature since 1967

        by Luc Deheuvels, Mike Thompson, Barbara Michalak-Pikulska, Paul Starkey

        This volume of essays is the first to be dedicated to the subject of intertextuality in modern Arabic literature. Beginning with a general overview of the topic by Roger Allen, it brings together essays on a range of writers from all parts of the Arab world, including, among others, Edwar al-Kharrat, Sa'd Allah Wannus, Najib Mahfuz, Rabi' Jabir, Salim Matar and the recently deceased Sudanese writer al-Tayyib Salih, whose seminal work Season of Migration to the North heralded a new phase in the modern Arabic literary tradition. The volume, which also includes two essays on aspects of intertextuality in Gulf literature, also discusses transformations of popular medieval literature such as the Alf Layla wa-Layla (the Thousand and One Nights) in modern Arabic literature. ;

        Becoming couture

        The Italian fashion industry after the Second World War

        by Chiara Faggella

        Becoming couture is the first book to examine the history of the Italian fashion industry during the global transition brought about by the Second World War. It draws on a wide range of primary sources, some of them newly unearthed, to demonstrate that the Italian fashion industry in the Republican era continued to rely on business practices and professionals established during Fascism. Analysing changes in promotional discourses and press coverage, the book traces the shift that occurred when manufacturers were encouraged to expand their exports of accessories to include sportswear, knitwear and moda boutique. This ultimately led to the legitimisation of Italian dressmaking as creatively independent of French influences and therefore worthy of the label 'couture'.

        Ein Land und zwei Völker

        Zur jüdisch-arabischen Frage

        by Martin Buber, Paul Mendes-Flohr

        »Es besteht für mich kein Zweifel daran, daß es die Schicksalsfrage des Nahen Ostens ist, ob eine Verständigung zwischen Israel und den arabischen Völkern zustande kommt, solange noch eine Möglichkeit dazu besteht. Damit ein so großes, fast präzedenzloses Werk gelingt, ist unerläßliche Voraussetzung, daß geistige Vertreter der beiden Völker miteinander in ein echtes Gespräch kommen, in dem sich gegenseitige Aufrichtigkeit und gegenseitige Anerkennung verbinden. Die geistigen Vertreter müssen in vollem Sinne des Wortes unabhängige Menschen sein, Menschen also, die durch keinerlei Rücksicht gehindert werden, der Sache, die sie als wahr und gerecht erkannt haben, rückhaltlos zu dienen.«Diese Sätze Martin Bubers (1878-1965) sind von ungebrochener Aktualität. Unter dem programmatischen Titel Ein Land und zwei Völker vereinigt der vorliegende Band die politischen Schriften des bedeutenden Religionsphilosophen. In ihnen wird deutlich, wie sehr ein grundlegendes, am nicht zerstörbaren Wert aller Menschen orientiertes sittliches Bewußtsein, das auf Versöhnung zielt, der Politik eine vernünftige Selbstbestimmung ermöglicht, ohne die konkreten Erfordernisse in Konflikten aus den Augen zu verlieren. Martin Buber geht es um das ›Miteinander‹, nicht um die Konfrontation, so wie er in seiner Philosophie des Dialogs bemüht war, ›Ich‹ und ›Du‹ in ihrer menschlichen Eigenständigkeit zusammenzubringen. Dabei erörtert er Fragen, die damals wie heute auf die drängenden und ungelösten Probleme im Zusammenleben von Juden und Arabern, von Israelis und Palästinensern hinweisen. »Haben wir einen eigenen Weg?« – »Falsche Propheten« – »Ein Judenstaat mit Kanonen, Flaggen und Orden?« – »Zwei Völker in Palästina« – »Wir brauchen die Araber, die Araber brauchen uns« sind Themen, die Buber in diesem Band behandelt. In seinem erweiterten Vorwort geht der Herausgeber Paul Mendes-Flohr auf die aktuelle politische Situation im Nahen Osten ein.Martin Bubers politische Schriften sind ein Dokument kritischer Vernunft und menschlicher Integrität, das aus seinem Geschichtsbewußtsein die normative Kraft für ein Leben in Frieden bezieht. Für Bubers Humanismus gilt ein Wort von Gustav Landauer, das heute so aktuell ist wie eh und je: »Frieden ist möglich, weil er notwendig ist.«

        Citizenship, nation, empire

        The politics of history teaching in England, 1870–1930

        by Andrew Thompson, Peter Yeandle, John M. MacKenzie

        Citizenship, nation, empire investigates the extent to which popular imperialism influenced the teaching of history between 1870 and 1930. It is the first book-length study to trace the substantial impact of educational psychology on the teaching of history, probing its impact on textbooks, literacy primers and teacher-training manuals. Educationists identified 'enlightened patriotism' to be the core objective of historical education. This was neither tub-thumping jingoism, nor state-prescribed national-identity teaching, but rather a carefully crafted curriculum for all children which fused civic as well as imperial ambitions. The book will be of interest to those studying or researching aspects of English domestic imperial culture, especially those concerned with questions of childhood and schooling, citizenship, educational publishing and anglo-British relations. Given that vitriolic debates about the politics of history teaching have endured into the twenty-first century, Citizenship, nation, empire is a timely study of the formative influences that shaped the history curriculum in English schools
