Bundesdeutsche Hilfe für im Ausland inhaftierte NS-Täter

Unmittelbar nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg waren in zahlreichen westeuropäischen Ländern NS-Kriegsverbrecher inhaftiert. Im Zuge der Westbindung der Bundesrepublik wurden die meisten von ihnen entlassen. Lediglich in Italien und den Niederlanden verblieben insgesamt fünf Deutsche im Gefängnis: der SS-Mann Herbert Kappler, als Kommandeur der Sicherheitspolizei verantwortlich für das Massaker in den Ardeatinischen Höhlen, sowie die »Vier von Breda«, die maßgeblich an der Ermordung der niederländischen Juden beteiligt gewesen waren. Hochrangige deutsche Politiker, unter ihnen die Bundeskanzler Brandt und Schmidt, setzten sich für ihre Freilassung ein. Felix Bohr zeichnet das westdeutsche Engagement für die im Ausland inhaftierten NS-Täter nach. Er zeigt, wie sich aus Netzwerken von Kirchenverbänden, Veteranenvereinigungen und Diplomaten eine einflussreiche Interessenvertretung formierte, die rechtliche und materielle Hilfe leistete. Während Opfer des NS-Regimes um gesellschaftliche Anerkennung und Entschädigung kämpften, organisierte die Lobby Unterstützung für die Kriegsverbrecher auf höchster politischer Ebene. Auf der Grundlage bislang mitunter nicht zugänglicher Quellen wirft Bohr einen umfassenden Blick auf ein bisher kaum bekanntes Kapitel bundesdeutscher Vergangenheitspolitik.
