        Left Bank Literary is a Sydney-based literary agency specialising in quality fiction and non-fiction.    Our name references the creative environment that blossomed in 'the city of light' nearly a century ago. These writers were a vital force in an era of rising conservatism and facism. We have created Left Bank Literary to provide a home for the fertile ideas of our clients and to ensure literature continues to contribute to the most important conversations of the world.

        »Was ist ein Einbruch in eine Bank gegen die Gründung einer Bank?«

        Das Brecht-Brevier zur Wirtschaftskrise

        by Bertolt Brecht, Tom Kindt

        Sieben Jahre Wirtschaftskrise.

        My Bank Washes Greener

        Eco lies told by the finance sector

        by Bernd Villhauer

        — By the expert in ethical business — Once you have finished this, you will never fall for green financial lies again — Global Ethic Institute (Weltethos- Institut) network And suddenly every bank is sustainable. This truly necessary "debate book" explains in a wellfounded way what green-washing means in the financial sector, and why banks, insurance companies, asset managers, stockbrokers and other financial players clothe themselves in their allegedly so green-and-friendly cloak. It provides an easy-to-understand explanation of the various forms of greenwashing, how we can recognise the different "varieties" and – above all – how we can avoid them. This is also important because the entire financial and capital system is an important part of a sustainable future – and this can only succeed if it is honest, transparent and impact-orientated.

        American society today

        by Edward Ashbee, Bill Jones

        American society today provides a balanced introduction to the defining features of contemporary American society. Includes the ways in which the US can be considered 'exceptional' - the character of the 'American dream', the role of ethnicity and race, and the differences between the regions. Considers in depth a number of contemporary debates including the claim that the US economy has lost its capacity to generate wealth and stimulate mobility, that there has been a process of civic disengagement as voluntary organisations have lost members, and that the traditional family is in decline. Includes a thorough investigation of the effects of the terrorist attacks of September 11 and their aftermath. Looks at the arguments put forward by those who assert that a common American identity has given way to a multitude of conflicting identities structured around factors such as race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. ;

        The US Economy Today

        by Edward Ashbee, Bill Jones

        The US Economy Today provides an invaluable introduction to American economic history since 1929. Its coverage includes the New Deal, the post-war boom, "stagflation" in the 1970s, "Reaganomics", the Clinton and Bush years, the 2008 - 2009 economic crisis and President Obama's first hundred days. In addition, this volume considers core contemporary economic policy debates and draws conclusions about the strengths and weaknesses of the US economic "model". It looks at the causes and consequences of inequality, the extent to which there is economic mobility, and the impact of globalization and foreign trade. This book will be essential reading for those studying or teaching American economics, economic history or politics and all those looking for a thorough and comprehensive introduction to this area. ;

        Womit handeln Banken?

        Eine Untersuchung zur Risikoverarbeitung in der Wirtschaft

        by Dirk Baecker, Niklas Luhmann, Dirk Baecker

        “Womit handeln Banken?” – Dirk Baeckers Antwort auf diese Frage ist aktueller denn je. Sie lautet: mit den Risiken von Zahlungsversprechen. In den drei Kapiteln seines Buches entfaltet er zunächst eine Theorie der Banken als selbstreferentielle Systeme und gibt dann einen prägnanten Überblick über die Entwicklung des Bankgeschäfts seit den 1930er Jahren, der zeigt, daß Politik und Wirtschaft in einer unverzichtbaren Risikogemeinschaft miteinander verbunden sind. Schließlich wendet er sich dem Konzept des Risikos selbst zu, dem die Banken um so stärker ausgesetzt sind, je turbulenter es auf den Märkten zugeht. Seine Empfehlung: Die Banken sollten ihre Geschäftspolitik nicht an der Unterscheidung Risiko/Sicherheit orientieren, sondern an der Unterscheidung Risiko/Gefahr. Im Vorwort zur Neuauflage zieht Baecker eine kurze Bilanz seiner Überlegungen und schlägt eine Brücke zu den gegenwärtigen Ereignissen auf dem Finanzmarkt.

        In the company of wolves

        Werewolves, wolves and wild children

        by Sam George, Bill Hughes

        In the company of wolves presents further research from the Open Graves, Open Minds Project. It connects together innovative research from a variety of perspectives on the cultural significance of wolves, wild children and werewolves as portrayed in different media and genres. We begin with the wolf itself as it has been interpreted as a cultural symbol and how it figures in contemporary debates about wilderness and nature. Alongside this, we consider eighteenth-century debates about wild children - often thought to have been raised by wolves and other animals - and their role in key questions about the origins of language and society. The collection continues with essays on werewolves and other shapeshifters as depicted in folk tales, literature, film and TV, concluding with the transition from animal to human in contemporary art, poetry and fashion.
