Das zur Legende gewordene Künstlercafé gegenüber der Gedächtniskirche am Kurfürstendamm war der Treffpunkt der Berliner Boheme, der Maler, Schriftsteller und Journalisten, der Theater- und Filmleute im Berlin der wilden Zwanziger. Seinen Ruhm verdankt es seinen illustren Gästen, die im Café und über das Café geschrieben haben. Die Texte aus dem »Industriegebiet der Intelligenz« schildern das Leben im Kaffeehaus – »Tür auf, Tür zu, hier geht es zu wie auf einem Bazar«, schreibt Else Lasker-Schüler – porträtieren sein schillerndes Publikum, erzählen von Schnorrern, von Kellnern und Portiers, die das Kommen und Gehen bewachten, stets darauf bedacht, dass sich kein »Nicht-Schwimmer« ins »Schwimmer-Bassin« verirrt, wie der Bereich für die Stammgäste genannt wurde.

A theory of distributive justice for the European Union

This highly original book constitutes one of the first attempts to examine the problem of distributive justice in the European Union in a systematic manner. João Labareda argues that the set of shared political institutions at EU level, including the European Parliament and the Court of Justice of the EU, generate democratic duties of redistribution among EU citizens. Furthermore, the economic structure of the EU, comprising a common market, a common currency and a free-movement area, triggers duties of reciprocity among member states. The responsibilities to fulfil these duties, Labareda argues, should be shared by the local, national and supranational levels of government. Not only should the EU act as a safety net to the national welfare systems, applying the principle of subsidiarity, but common market and Eurozone regulations should balance their efficiency targets with fair cooperation terms. The concrete policy proposals presented in this book include a threshold of basic goods for all EU citizens, an EU labour code, a minimum EU corporate tax rate and an EU fund for competitiveness. Labarada argues that his proposals match the political culture of the member states, are economically feasible, can be translated into functioning institutions and policies and are consistent with the limited degree of social solidarity in Europe. This book is a major contribution to the understanding of what a just Europe would look like and what it might take to get us there. Inspired by Leif Eiriksson's visit to Vinland in about the year 1000, novels, poetry, history, politics, arts and crafts, comics, films and video games have all come to reflect rising interest in the medieval Norse and their North American presence. Uniquely in reception studies, From Iceland to the Americas approaches this dynamic between Nordic history and its reception by bringing together international authorities on mythology, language, film and cultural studies, as well as on the literature that has dominated critical reception. The British love of sport is legendary. In this lively and stimulating book Derek Birley looks at the part it played in shaping British society. The book traces the development of sporting conventions from medieval chivalry to modern notions of sportsmanship and fair play. Particular sports from hunting and the tournament to ball-games and athletics are shown against the social background of the emerging nation. The first laws of favourite pastimes such as horse-racing, cricket and boxing were devised by the privileged for gambling purposes, but were enthusiastically followed by the lower orders for pleasure and profit. Amongst the topics explored are the changing fortunes and fashions in field sports, 'gentlemen and players' in cricket, the public school games cult, purity in amateur rowing, the urban middle-class discovery of lawn tennis and golf, and the 'north-south divide' in football. These social issues are cross-threads in the theme of sport's influence on national identity, patriotism and imperialism in the making of Britain. Remarkable in its scope and in its linking of sport to the changing social political scene, this is a splendidly readable history. ;

Politische Gerechtigkeit muß fair sein. Dies war die Kernaussage von John Rawls' Versuch einer Erneuerung der Theorie vom Gesellschaftsvertrag aus dem Jahre 1971. Binnen weniger Monate avancierte sein Werk zu den meistdiskutierten moral- und staatsphilosophischen Programmen der neueren Zeit. Rawls' Gerechtigkeitspostulate und der Aspekt ihrer Durchführbarkeit in bezug auf Institutionen wie auch die Ansprüche an den einzelnen sind als Entwurf einer Gesellschaft, in der das Rechte zugleich als das Gute anerkannt wird, noch immer in der Diskussion.32 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung seines fulminanten vertragsrechtlichen Gedankenexperiments, Eine Theorie der Gerechtigkeit, erscheint nun der Neuentwurf, in dem Rawls auf Einwände und Fragen seiner Kritiker reagiert. Er wendet sich darin vor allem dem Begriff der »Justice as Fairness« zu und präsentiert ihn anstelle einer weit ausgreifenden moralischen Doktrin »als eine politische Konzeption der Gerechtigkeit«. Diese Umorientierung macht die Vorführung der Ausgangsideen in veränderter Bedeutung und Signifikanz ebenso nötig wie die Integration vollkommen neuer Aspekte. Rawls' Ziel: die realistischere Vorgabe eines gut geordneten Gemeinwesens.
