Canongate Books Ltd.
Canongate is an independent publisher: since 1973 we’ve worked to unearth and amplify the most vital, exciting voices we can find, wherever they come from, and we’ve published all kinds of books – thoughtful, upsetting, gripping, beatific, vulgar, chaste, unrepentant, life-changing . . . Along the way there have been landmarks of fiction – including Alasdair Gray’s masterpiece Lanark, and Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, the best-ever-selling Booker winner – and non-fiction too. We’ve published an American president and a Guantanamo detainee; we’ve campaigned for causes we believe in and fought court cases to get our authors heard. And twice we’ve won Publisher of the Year. We’re still fiercely independent, and we’re as committed to unorthodox and innovative publishing as ever. Has devolution worked?
The verdict from policy-makers and the public
by John Curtice, Bed Seyd
Devolution to Scotland and Wales represented the most fundamental reform of the British state for almost a century. Ten years on, how successful has the reform been? Drawing on the views of citizens, elected representatives and interest groups in Scotland and Wales, this book provides an answer. The book is based on a wide ranging programme of research, involving dedicated surveys and interviews across Scotland, Wales and England. The results provide important new evidence on how devolution has been seen to have performed. What are its perceived achievements? What are its shortcomings? Is the new devolution 'settlement' stable, or is there a demand for further reform? By bringing together perspectives from the public, members of the devolved legislatures and representatives of civil society, the book establishes a unique picture of where devolution in Britain stands today. The book is accessibly written, and contains a wide range of useful primary data. It is ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying devolution in Britain, as well as for general readers with an interest in constitutional reform and territorial politics. ;

Seminar: Abweichendes Verhalten II
Die gesellschaftliche Reaktion auf Kriminalität. Band 1. Strafgesetzgebung und Strafrechtsdogmatik
by Fritz Sack, Klaus Lüderssen, Gisela Schmitt-Klewer, Heinrich Geddert, Jörg Adrian Huber, Peter Frellesen, Annette Roellenbleck, Joachim Scherer

We Can Do Better
by Arvay, Clemens G.
How Environmental Destruction Caused the Corona Pandemic and Why Ecological Medicine Can Save Us The corona crisis can repeat itself at any time. A book about the disease-causing mechanisms of environmental pollution, and an innovative guide out of the health crisis Clemens Arvay is an expert in the field of medical ecology. In WE CAN DO BETTER, he takes the current corona crisis as an opportunity to look far beyond and work out exactly why negative environmental factors are responsible for an increasing deterioration of public health. Yet the author also points the way out of the calamity, explaining how we ourselves and future generations can improve our health through a different approach to nature.It was only because of environmental factors that COVID-19 was able to become a pandemic. Thus, for Clemens Arvay the corona crisis represents a symptom of a much larger problem, namely, a natural habitat that is making humans sick. It is already known today that fine particulate matter intensifies not only corona but also influenza infections, thereby killing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide every year. Light pollution leads to a rapid increase in cancer, and even the abrasion of automobile tires inhibits our immune system. Clemens Arvay makes himself clear: this is our last chance to take control of the situation. After the corona crisis, we must never allow things to return to the way they were before. Arvay therefore calls for nothing less than an eco-medical revolution in healthcare; a different, less global and industrialized lifestyle. And he shows each and every one of us how we can utilize factors in our environment to protect our health, strengthen our immune system, and stay well. The renewal of post-war Manchester
Planning, architecture and the state
by Richard Brook
A compelling account of the project to transform post-war Manchester, revealing the clash between utopian vision and compromised reality. Urban renewal in Britain was thrilling in its vision, yet partial and incomplete in its implementation. For the first time, this deep study of a renewal city reveals the complex networks of actors behind physical change and stagnation in post-war Britain. Using the nested scales of region, city and case-study sites, the book explores the relationships between Whitehall legislation, its interpretation by local government planning officers and the on-the-ground impact through urban architectural projects. Each chapter highlights the connections between policy goals, global narratives and the design and construction of cities. The Cold War, decolonialisation, rising consumerism and the oil crisis all feature in a richly illustrated account of architecture and planning in post-war Manchester.

Walking in the dark
James Baldwin, my father and I
by Douglas Field
A moving exploration of the life and work of the celebrated American writer, blending biography and memoir with literary criticism. Since James Baldwin's death in 1987, his writing - including The Fire Next Time, one of the manifestoes of the Civil Rights Movement, and Giovanni's Room, a pioneering work of gay fiction - has only grown in relevance. Douglas Field was introduced to Baldwin's essays and novels by his father, who witnessed the writer's debate with William F. Buckley at Cambridge University in 1965. In Walking in the dark, he embarks on a journey to unravel his life-long fascination and to understand why Baldwin continues to enthral us decades after his death. Tracing Baldwin's footsteps in France, the US and Switzerland, and digging into archives, Field paints an intimate portrait of the writer's life and influence. At the same time, he offers a poignant account of coming to terms with his father's Alzheimer's disease. Interweaving Baldwin's writings on family, illness, memory and place, Walking in the dark is an eloquent testament to the enduring power of great literature to illuminate our paths.
