        The reign of Richard II

        From minority to tyranny 1377–97

        by Alison McHardy

        The long-awaited prequel to Chronicles of the revolution covers the first twenty years (1377-97) of Richard II's reign. This richly-documented period offers exceptional opportunities and challenges to students, and the editor has selected material from a wide range of sources: well-known English chronicles, foreign chronicles and legal, administrative and financial records. These are arranged chronologically to form a coherent narrative of the reign. Clear and lively commentary and notes enable readers to make the fullest use of each document. The introduction describes the complex domestic and international situation which confronted the young king and offers guidance on the strengths and weaknesses of the reign's leading chronicles. The dramatic and diverse politics of the reign of Richard II make this the ideal special subject and an accessible, affordable, student-friendly documentary history of Richard II's reign has long been needed. This book is designed to fill that gap.

        Stop the Hatred!

        A Pamphlet Against Antisemitism

        by Sigmund Gottlieb

        The increasing hostility that Jews experience can no longer be explained away with fine rhetoric. Antisemitism is taking hold in a menacing way at the heart of society. Sigmund Gottlieb addresses his wake-up call to the population at large: stand up – not only against right-wing extremist violence and radical Islamism, but also against hatred in the social media, against unfair criticism of the state of Israel, against anti-Jewish abusive language in the school playground, against trivializing reports in the media and day-to-day indifference. The resurgent talk of ‘packed suitcases’ in Jewish communities is a moral indictment. And it is intolerable.

        Band 2: Johann Gottlieb Heineccius: Grundlagen des Natur- und Völkerrechts

        by Johann Gottlieb Heineccius, Michael Stolleis, Christoph Bergfeld, Hans Maier, Peter Mortzfeld

        Ladivine

        by Marie NDiaye

        Eine Familientragödie? Eine Verwechslungskomödie? Eine Geschichte dreier Generationen zwischen Afrika, Berlin und französischer Provinz im globalen Zeitalter? Ein Bericht über den Einbruch des Fantastischen in die Realität? All dies − und natürlich noch viel mehr − vereint der neue Roman von Marie NDiaye mit einer sprachlichen Leichtigkeit und Virtuosität, einer raffinierten Einfachheit, die das Komplexe durchsichtig macht. Malinka besucht ihre Mutter Ladivine Sylla einmal im Monat in Bordeaux. Die Tochter möchte eine ganz andere Frau werden: Und so legt sie sich, auf dem ersten Schritt nach oben, den (von ihr für typisch gehaltenen französischen) Vornamen Clarisse zu, als sie eine Stelle als Kellnerin antritt. Dort lernt sie ihren Mann, Richard Rivière, kennen. Damit setzen ungewöhnlich ereignisreiche Handlungsabläufe ein, die von Frankreich nach Afrika und nach Berlin reichen. Und es wäre zu erwähnen der Hund, der immer wieder in Erscheinung tritt. Er muß als Symbol gelten für das nicht-realistische Erzählen der Marie NDiaye. Sie beschreibt Zusammenhänge zwischen den Menschen aus deren Innenperspektive, zergliedernd, jede Regung hin- und herwendend − und zugleich deutlich machend, dass alle Personen etwas nicht rational Reduzierbares bergen und verbergen, das sie durch Ereignisse in der Realität bestätigt glauben. Ihre Personen verrät Marie NDiaye nie. Dadurch entsteht das intensive Textgewebe, die Spannung zwischen realer und irrealler Welt.

        The right and the recession

        by Edward Ashbee, Richard Hayton

        The right and the recession considers the ways in which conservative activists, groupings, parties and interests in the US and Britain responded to the financial crisis and the 'Great Recession' that followed in its wake. The book looks at the tensions and stresses between different ideas, interests and institutions and the ways in which they shaped the character of political outcomes. In Britain, these processes opened the way for leading Conservatives to redefine their commitment to fiscal retrenchment and austerity. Whereas public expenditure reductions had been portrayed as a necessary response to earlier overspending they were increasingly represented as a way of securing a permanently 'leaner' state. The book assesses the character of this shift in thinking as well as the viability of these efforts to shrink the state and the parallel attempts in the US to cut federal government spending through mechanisms such as the budget sequester. ;

        US diplomacy and the Good Friday Agreement in post-conflict Northern Ireland

        by Richard Hargy

        Richard Haass and Mitchell Reiss, as autonomous diplomats in the George W. Bush State Department, were able to alter US intervention in Northern Ireland and play critical roles in the post-1998 peace process. Their contributions have not been fully appreciated or understood. The restoration of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government in 2007 was made possible by State Department-led intervention in the peace process. There are few references to Northern Ireland in work examining the foreign policy legacy of the George W. Bush presidency. Moreover, the ability to control US foreign policy towards the region brought one of George W. Bush's Northern Ireland special envoys into direct diplomatic conflict with the most senior actors inside the British government. This book will uncover the extent of this fall-out and provide original accounts on how diplomatic relations between these old allies became so fraught.
