        US diplomacy and the Good Friday Agreement in post-conflict Northern Ireland

        by Richard Hargy

        Richard Haass and Mitchell Reiss, as autonomous diplomats in the George W. Bush State Department, were able to alter US intervention in Northern Ireland and play critical roles in the post-1998 peace process. Their contributions have not been fully appreciated or understood. The restoration of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government in 2007 was made possible by State Department-led intervention in the peace process. There are few references to Northern Ireland in work examining the foreign policy legacy of the George W. Bush presidency. Moreover, the ability to control US foreign policy towards the region brought one of George W. Bush's Northern Ireland special envoys into direct diplomatic conflict with the most senior actors inside the British government. This book will uncover the extent of this fall-out and provide original accounts on how diplomatic relations between these old allies became so fraught.

        The Leibniz-Clarke Correspondence

        With extracts from Newton's 'Principia' and 'Optiks'

        by Robert Gavin Alexander

        n 1715 Leibniz wrote to his friend the Princess of Wales to warn her of the dangers Newton's philosophy posed for natural religion. Seizing this chance of initiating an exchange between the two greatest minds in Europe, the princess showed his letter to the eminent Newtonian scientist and natural theologian, Samuel Clarke. From his reply developed an exchange of papers which was published in 1717. The correspondence was immediately seen as a crucial discussion of the significance of the new science, and it became one of the most widely read philosophical works of its time.In this edition, an introduction outlines the historical background, and there is a valuable survey of the subsequent discussions of the problem of space and time in the philosophy of science. Significant references to the controversy in Leibniz's other correspondence have also been collected, and the relevant passages from Newton's Principia and Opticks are appended. Tony Richardson

        by Robert Shail, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        Tony Richardson was a key figure in British cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. Having established himself in the theatre with the first production of John Osborne's landmark play Look Back in Anger, he became a central director in the New Wave, bringing greater realism to British cinema. He went on to make some of the most significant films of the 1960s including the multi Oscar-winning Tom Jones. This detailed and authoritative account of Richardson's career provides a reassessment of his achievements. As well as looking at his best known films, it considers neglected works such as Ned Kelly and Joseph Andrews, illustrating how Richardson remained a champion of the socially marginalised. In mapping out his life and work, from the English Stage Company to his final films in America, Shail re-establishes Richardson's at the front rank of British film directors, confirming his contribution to a period of dynamic change in British culture. ;

        The reign of Richard II

        From minority to tyranny 1377–97

        by Alison McHardy

        The long-awaited prequel to Chronicles of the revolution covers the first twenty years (1377-97) of Richard II's reign. This richly-documented period offers exceptional opportunities and challenges to students, and the editor has selected material from a wide range of sources: well-known English chronicles, foreign chronicles and legal, administrative and financial records. These are arranged chronologically to form a coherent narrative of the reign. Clear and lively commentary and notes enable readers to make the fullest use of each document. The introduction describes the complex domestic and international situation which confronted the young king and offers guidance on the strengths and weaknesses of the reign's leading chronicles. The dramatic and diverse politics of the reign of Richard II make this the ideal special subject and an accessible, affordable, student-friendly documentary history of Richard II's reign has long been needed. This book is designed to fill that gap.

        Tony Garnett

        by Stephen Lacey, Jonathan Bignell, Sarah Cardwell, Steven Peacock

        Tony Garnett is the first book-length study of one of the most respected and prolific producers working in British television. From ground-breaking dramas from the 1960s such as Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home to the 'must see' series in the 1990s and 2000s such as This Life and The Cops, Garnett has produced some of the most important and influential British television drama. This book charts Garnett's career from his early days as an actor to his position as executive producer and head of World Productions. Drawing on personal interviews, archival research, contextual analysis and selected case studies, Tony Garnett examines the ways in which Garnett has helped to define the role of the producer in British television drama. Arguing that Garnett was both a key creative and political influence on the work he produced and an enabler of the work of others, the book traces his often combative relationships with broadcasting institutions (especially the BBC). Additionally, the study discusses the films he made for the cinema and considers some of the ways in which Garnett's experiments in film technology – 16 mm in the 1960s, digital video in the 1990s – have shaped his creative output. Tony Garnett will be of interest to all levels of researchers and students of British television drama, media and film. ;

        Charles Dickens

        Little People, Big Dreams. Deutsche Ausgabe

        by María Isabel Sánchez Vegara, Isobel Ross, Silke Kleemann

        Der kleine Charles war eine Leseratte, Bücher verschlang er wie andere ein Stück Brot. Aber seine Familie war bettelarm, und so musste er mit zwölf die Schule verlassen und in der Fabrik arbeiten. Nun erfand er selbst Geschichten, sie handelten von Menschen, die das Beste aus ihrem Leben machten. So wie er, der – inzwischen Angestellter in einer Kanzlei – Fortsetzungsgeschichten für Zeitungen schrieb, die man ihm aus den Händen riss. Noch heute werden seine Geschichten landauf, landab gelesen. Allen voran die Weihnachtsgeschichte, aber auch die Geschichte von Oliver Twist, einem Waisenjungen, der auf der Straße lebte. War es ein bisschen auch seine eigene Geschichte? Little People, Big Dreams erzählt von den beeindruckenden Lebensgeschichten großer Menschen: Jede dieser Persönlichkeiten, ob Philosophin, Forscherin oder Sportler, hat Unvorstellbares erreicht. Dabei begann alles, als sie noch klein waren: mit großen Träumen.

        Bedsit land

        The strange worlds of Soft Cell

        by Patrick Clarke

        A rich and revealing examination of the legendary pop duo Soft Cell. Soft Cell are not your average pop band. Marc Almond and Dave Ball may be best known for the string of hits they released in 1981, but the powerful first phase of their collaboration embraced a staggering array of sounds, influences and innovations that would change the face of music to come. In Bedsit land, Patrick Clarke plunges into the archives and interviews more than sixty contributors, including the band members themselves, to follow Soft Cell through the many strange and sprawling worlds that shaped their extraordinary career. They lead him from the faded camp glamour of the British seaside to the dizzying thrills of the New York club scene. From transgressive student performance art to the sleaze and squalor of pre-gentrified Soho. From the glitz of British showbiz to the drug-addled chaos of post-Franco Spain. He emerges on the other side with the most in-depth, innovative and entertaining account of the duo ever written.

        Demokratie?

        Eine Debatte

        by Alain Badiou, Daniel Bensaïd, Giorgio Agamben, Jacques Rancière, Jean-Luc Nancy, Kristin Ross, Slavoj Zizek, Wendy Brown

        Zu Beginn des dritten Jahrtausends ist die Situation der Demokratie paradox: Einerseits sind mehr Staaten denn jemals zuvor demokratisch verfaßt, andererseits nehmen die Krisensymptome in den Staaten, die einstmals so etwas wie eine demokratische Avantgarde bildeten, zu: Die Wahlbeteiligung sinkt, schillernde Persönlichkeiten wie Silvio Berlusconi oder Nicolas Sarkozy gewinnen an Bedeutung, Wahlkämpfe geraten zu schalen Marketingkampagnen. Colin Crouch hat all diese Trends in dem Band "Postdemokratie" präzise auf den Punkt gebracht. In diesem Band setzen sich nun acht herausragende politische Denkerinnen und Denker mit dem Zustand und den Perspektiven der am wenigsten schlechten aller Regierungsformen (Winston Churchill) auseinander, die tageszeitung sprach von einem 'Who's who der internationalen linken Theorie'. Der Diskussionsband enthält Beiträge von Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou, Daniel Bensaïd, Wendy Brown, Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Rancière, Kristin Ross und Slavoj iek.

        The pastor in print

        Genre, audience, and religious change in early modern England

        by Amy G. Tan

        The pastor in print explores the phenomenon of early modern pastors who chose to become print authors, addressing ways authorship could enhance, limit or change clerical ministry and ways pastor-authors conceived of their work in parish and print. It identifies strategies through which pastor-authors established authorial identities, targeted different sorts of audiences and strategically selected genre and content as intentional parts of their clerical vocation. The first study to provide a book-length analysis of the phenomenon of early modern pastors writing for print, it uses a case study of prolific pastor-author Richard Bernard to offer a new lens through which to view religious change in this pivotal period. By bringing together questions of print, genre, religio-politics and theology, the book will interest scholars and postgraduate students in history, literature and theological studies, and its readability will appeal to undergraduates and non-specialists.
