This is a study of Britain's presence in China both at its peak, and during its inter-war dissolution in the face of assertive Chinese nationalism and declining British diplomatic support. Using archival materials from China and records in Britain and the United States, the author paints a portrait of the traders, missionaries, businessmen, diplomats and settlers who constituted "Britain-in-China", challenging our understanding of British imperialism there. Bickers argues that the British presence in China was dominated by urban settlers whose primary allegiance lay not with any grand imperial design, but with their own communities and precarious livelihoods. This brought them into conflict not only with the Chinese population, but with the British imperial government. The book also analyzes the formation and maintenance of settler identities, and then investigates how the British state and its allies brought an end to the reign of freelance, settler imperialism on the China coast. At the same time, other British sectors, missionary and business, renegotiated their own relationship with their Chinese markets and the Chinese state and distanced themselves from the settler British.

Reorganizing empires into nation states

Most scholars believe that China's nationality policy, like that of other socialist states, imitated the Soviet nationality model, a system which has been termed an "affirmative action empire." This book offers two contributions to the literature which run counter to this convention. First, it argues that the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Soviet Union (USSR) were different; while the PRC was aimed to build an ideal-typical nation-state, the USSR was an open union of nation-states that was only temporarily confined to a physical territory. Second, while scholars who have noted this difference attribute it to contextual factors, such as ethnic structure, geopolitical status, and Russia's intervention into the Chinese Revolution, this book contends that context shaped the Sino-Soviet difference, yet it did not determine it. Rather, there was significant leeway between the implications of the contextual factors, and what the policy-designers ultimately established. This book probes who held agency, and how these individuals bridged this gap.

Als Josef Winkler sich im Jahre 2004 eine Zeitlang in Tokio im Stadtteil Roppongi aufhält, ereilt ihn die Nachricht vom Tod seines fast hundertjährigen Vaters. Noch ein Jahr zuvor hatte der Alte ihn beschworen, seinem Begräbnis fernzubleiben, weil der Sohn nicht müde geworden war, den seligen Frieden seines Kärntner Heimatdorfes mit seiner Schreibhand zu durchkreuzen. Eine Zeit danach erscheint die Erinnerungsgeschichte Roppongi – Requiem für einen Vater, die den Leser an Schauplätze in Japan, Kärnten und Indien führt. Das Requiem für Josef Winklers im Jahre 2011 verstorbene Mutter Mutter und der Bleistift, in dem die Mutter ihren am Küchentisch kritzelnden linkshändigen Sohn immer wieder auffordert, den Bleistift in die rechte Hand zu nehmen, entsteht in Südfrankreich, Indien und Kiew. „Reisen, um heimatlos zu werden“, heißt es bei Henri Michaux. Nach dem Tod von Vater und Mutter ist der Linkshänder, der mit der rechten Hand schreiben gelernt hat, seine Heimat losgeworden.

Aus dem Korpus der Briefe an die Mutter wurden bisher lediglich 29 Briefe publiziert; über 1100 Briefe werden nun zum erstenmal der Öffentlichkeit vorgelegt. Sie gewähren bemerkenswerte Einblicke in den Alltag des Dichters, beleuchten seine Vorlieben und Sorgen. Aber auch das komplizierte Verhältnis zu seiner Mutter wird in ein völlig neues Licht gerückt. Am 4. Dezember 1896 feiert Rilke seinen 21. Geburtstag. Am Tag darauf schickt er seiner Mutter den gerade erschienenen Gedichtband Traumgekrönt, dem er am 8. Dezember einen Dankesbrief für die Geburtstagssendung folgen läßt: »Ich bin in der Zeit meines Fernseins um zwei Körperjahre, geistig wohl um 10 älter geworden.« Die Zäsur, die Rilke hier anspricht und für die das Datum der Volljährigkeit steht, spiegelt sich auch, nach einer Pause von drei Jahren, im Wiedereinsetzen der Korrespondenz mit der Mutter, die bis kurz vor Rilkes Tod im Dezember 1926 nicht mehr abreißt. Die Beziehung Rilkes zu seiner Mutter ist von ihm selbst und von seinen Biographen stets als prägend erkannt, zum Teil aber auch verzeichnet worden. Die Briefe an die Mutter verschaffen endlich Klarheit: Ob Rilke die Mutter bei ihrer Lektüre und ihren Reisevorhaben berät oder von seiner Tochter Ruth erzählt, ob er sie teilhaben läßt an seinem eigenen unsteten Leben, indem er detailliert Auskunft gibt über die Orte, an denen er sich aufhält – immer entsteht das Bild eines warmherzig liebenden Sohnes, der sich aufrichtig um ihr Wohlergehen sorgt.
