      • Strange Days Books, Social Cooperative Enterprise

        Strange Days Books is a social cooperative publishing firm based in Crete, Greece. Since 2012 we have published almost 100 books. Every year we organize Sand Festival, an online Writers’ Workshop and - in cooperation with www.eyelands.gr literary magazine - the one and only international short story competition based in Greece, plus our International Book Awards. In 2019 SDB was the only publishing house in Greece to receive approval by the European Union’s Creative Europe translation funding program for its project "Strange Days in Europe”. Strange Days Books is an entirely independent publisher, primarily interested in showcasing the wealth of new writing voices in Greece. We work closely with our authors to create books that will appeal to booklovers, books about the present, books that strive to push the art of literature forward, books written with talent and passion, books that challenge the way we see the world, books bursting with new ideas and intriguing perspectives.

        "Das »Bacon-Projekt« definiert einen Grundzug der Moderne; während in der Antike die Erkenntnis der Natur als Selbstzweck galt, betrachtet sie die Neuzeit als ein Mittel zur Mehrung des allgemeinen Menschenwohls. Die Naturforschung soll die Entwicklung einer Technik ins Werk setzen und damit dem Menschen Machtmittel zur Verfügung stellen, durch die er sich aus materieller Not und Naturabhängigkeit befreien kann. Francis Bacon (1551-1626) war der Propagandist der neuen Zielbestimmung der Naturforschung. Die in den modernen Industrieländern praktizierte technische Form der Naturnutzung ist infolge der jetzt offenkundig werdenden Schädigungen an der Natur zunehmend unter Kritik geraten. Mit den Befunden der »ökologischen Krise« wird nicht nur auf die Bedrohlichkeit der Technikfolgeschäden hingewiesen, sondern es wird zugleich die neuzeitliche Art der Naturforschung für die absehbare Katastrophe verantwortlich gemacht. Hans Jonas hat deshalb verlangt, daß wir das »Baconsche Ideal« aufgeben und uns dem Gedanken der Bewahrung der Natur verschreiben. Nicht länger sollten Ziele und Zwecke des Menschen die Grundlage unseres Handelns gegenüber der Natur sein; das »Prinzip Verantwortung« gebiete vielmehr, die in der westlichen Zivilisation dominant gewesene »Anthropozentrik« zu verabschieden und die Eigenrechte der Natur in unserem Handeln zu respektieren. Gegen diese pauschale Beschuldigung der Moderne ist die vorliegende Studie gerichtet. Schäfer sieht durch die ökologische Krise nicht die Aufkündigung des Baconschen Ideals geboten - wohl aber eine drastische Revision des »Baconschen Programms«, d.h. der Mittel und Methoden, mit denen das Ideal seither verfolgt wurde."

        Max Frisch, geboren am 15. Mai 1911 in Zürich, arbeitete zunächst als Journalist, später als Architekt, bis ihm mit seinem Roman Stiller (1954) der Durchbruch als Schriftsteller gelang. Es folgten die Romane Homo faber (1957) und Mein Name sei Gantenbein (1964) sowie Erzählungen, Tagebücher, Theaterstücke, Hörspiele und Essays. Frisch starb am 4. April 1991 in Zürich. Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch. Jetzt ist Sehenszeit (Suhrkamp 1998) sowie jetzt: max frisch (Suhrkamp 2001) und arbeitet als freier Journalist und Autor in Zürich. Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch.         James Fenimore Cooper wurde am 15. September 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey / USA geboren. Nach seiner Geburt gründete sein Vater die Stadt Cooperstown, wo die Familie fortan lebte. 1802 begann Cooper ein Studium an der Universität Yale, der er jedoch drei Jahre später verwiesen wurde. Nach einigen Jahren als Offizier bei der Handels- und Kriegsmarine lebte er mit seiner Familie in Cooperstown, Westchester, Long Island und in New York. Sein erster Roman Precaution (1820) war ein Mißerfolg, doch schon der Nachfolger The Spy (1821) war der Beginn einer erfolgreichen, internationalen Karriere. Heute ist er vor allem durch seine Lederstrumpf-Romane bekannt. Nach einer dreijährigen Europareise ließ er sich ab 1833 endgültig in Cooperstown nieder. Er begann sich kritisch mit Gesellschaftsverhältnissen auseinanderzusetzen, was Ablehnung und Anfeindungen nach sich zog. Mit dem 1840 veröffentlichten The Pathfinder konnte er jedoch wieder an seine früheren Erfolge anknüpfen. Er starb am 14. September 1851 in Cooperstown.
