        Somewhere Else Entertainment manages Huai Guan's story IPs, and develops screenplays and bibles for TV series and films. Huai Guan was born in a small town in southern Taiwan, and spent her childhood years among books. Cao Xueqin’s Story of the Stone and George R. R. Martin’s A Song for Lya  ignited her love for fantasy writing, which no amount of travel or pressure – including a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago – could ever subdue.

        University engagement and environmental sustainability

        by Michael Osborne, Patricia Inman, Diana Robinson

        Universities have a key role to play in contributing to environmental development and combating climate change. The chapters within this volume detail the challenges faced by higher education institutions in considering environmental sustainability, and provide both a broad view of university engagement and a detailed examination of various projects. As part of this series in association with the Place and Social Capital and Learning (PASCAL) International Observatory, the three key PASCAL themes of place management, lifelong learning and the development of social capital are considered throughout the book. While universities have historically generated knowledge outside of specific local contexts, this book argues that it is particularly important for them to engage with the local community and to consider diverse perspectives and assets when looking at issues within an ecological context. The chapters in this volume provide new perspectives and frames of reference for transforming universities by engaging in the development of resilient communities.

        Entertaining the empire

        London music hall and the export of Britishness

        by Andrew Horrall

        The stage entertainments known as music hall emerged in mid-Victorian London just as the British began colonising large parts of the world.Settlers recreated this metropolitan popular culture throughout the empire and in places under foreign control. They erected music halls resembling those at home, imported songs and sketches, performed inamateur shows and watched touring professionals. London originals were rewritten as commentaries on local conditions. This activity transformed music hall into a marker of an exclusionary British identity overseas and made colonies look and sound more like Britain. The result was that settlers separated by vast distances were linked by a shared popular culture. The touring circuits and cultural affinities the Victorians created endure to this day.

        Entertaining television

        The BBC and popular television culture in the 1950s

        by Su Holmes

        Entertaining television challenges the idea that the BBC in the 1950s was elitist and 'staid', upholding Reithian values in a paternalistic, even patronising way. By focusing on a number of (often controversial) programme case studies - such as the soap opera, the quiz/ game show, the 'problem' show and programmes dealing with celebrity culture - Su Holmes demonstrates how BBC television surprisingly explored popular interests and desires. She also uncovers a number of remarkable connections with programmes and topics at the forefront of television today, ranging from talk shows, 'Reality TV', even to our contemporary obsession with celebrity. The book is iconclastic, percipient and grounded in archival research, and will be of use to anyone studying television history. ;

        Hold Your Own

        Gedichte

        by Kae Tempest, Johanna Wange

        Englisch und deutsch. Übersetzt von Johanna Wange. »Sie ist mehr als modern; sie ist praktisch Science-Fiction«, schreibt der Guardian über Kate Tempest. Zu ihren Einflüssen zählen James Joyce und Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy und Virginia Woolf. Sie beherrscht den innigen Volksliedton ebenso wie Londons Straßenslang, wandelt virtuos zwischen lyrischer Tradition und Hip-Hop. Ihre Gedichte bemächtigen sich auf radikal heutige, politische Weise des Mythos von Teiresias, einer zweigeschlechtlichen Figur, von den Göttern geblendet und prophetisch begabt. In vier Teilen folgt der Zyklus dem Kind, dem Jüngling, der Frau und dem Mann, vermittelt eindrucksvoll, wie es ist, alt zu werden und »sehend«, dazu verurteilt, unserer neoliberalen Gesellschaft die Wahrheit zu sagen – und keiner hört zu. Lyrik-Empfehlung 2016 der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, der Stiftung Lyrik Kabinett und der Literaturwerkstatt Berlin.

        Intent!

        oder Die Spiegel des Todes

        by Ljubko Deresch, Maria Weissenböck

        Petro Pjatotschkin geht noch zur Schule, als er sein phänomenales Gedächtnis entdeckt. Ein Blick ins Buch genügt, um den Unterrichtsstoff abzuspeichern. Seine skurrile Begabung macht ihn zum Außenseiter und Grübler, der sich in wissenschaftliche Werke über Zeit und Bewußtsein vertieft. Er experimentiert mit sich selbst und stellt fest, daß er sich auch an Ereignisse erinnert, die er nicht erlebt haben kann. Im "Café Kosmos", dem russischen Buchladen in Lemberg, lernt Petro eine junge Künstlerin aus Montreal kennen, die sich der abstrakten Malerei verschrieben hat. Ihre Bilder mit Titeln wie "Misted Mirror" oder "Intent!" erscheinen ihm als Symbole seiner "Gedächtniskunst", er meint darin ihre Fähigkeit zu erkennen, wie er Parallelwelten zu sehen. Eine leidenschaftliche Liebe beginnt …

        A Trick to Catch the Old One

        By Thomas Middleton

        by David Bevington, Paul Mulholland, Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Helen Ostovich

        This is the first single volume edition of A Trick to Catch the Old One for many decades. This edition presents a thoroughly reconsidered text based on collation of all known copies of the 1608 quarto (including material unnoticed by earlier editors). Textual analysis draws on detailed internal investigation and the printer's wider practice to propose that relatively improvisational procedures and a paper quota governed A Trick's printing operations. Discovery of an overlooked record revises the date of court performance to 1 January 1607, with implications for the play's early history. Critical discussion freshly examines the play's multi-layered ironic texture in relation to such issues as the status of women, marriage's relation to prostitution and vice versa, and the contemporary marriage market. And the Courtesan receives special attention in the context of this overarching ironic scheme. An extensive stage history explores original staging and documents revivals to 2011. The commentary is the most wide-ranging and comprehensive of all modern editions. ;

        Conflict, Politics and Proselytism

        Methodist missionaries in colonial and postcolonial Burma, 1887–1966

        by Andrew Thompson, Michael D. Leigh, John M. MacKenzie

        This book is a study of the ambitions, activities and achievements of Methodist missionaries in northern Burma from 1887-1966 and the expulsion of the last missionaries by Ne Win. The story is told through painstaking original research in archives which contain thousands of hitherto unpublished documents and eyewitness accounts meticulously recorded by the Methodist missionaries. This accessible study constitutes a significant contribution to a very little-known area of missionary history. Leigh pulls together the themes of conflict, politics and proselytisation in to a fascinating study of great breadth. The historical nuances of the relationship between religion and governance in Burma are traced in an accessible style. This book will appeal to those teaching or studying colonial and postcolonial history, Burmese politics, and the history of missionary work.

        Radicalisation, counter-radicalisation, and Prevent

        A vernacular approach

        by Lee Jarvis, Andrew Whiting, Stuart Macdonald

        This book offers the first sustained investigation into non-elite understandings of radicalisation and counter-radicalisation policy. Drawing on original focus group research with students from universities across England and Wales, the book explores how 'ordinary' citizens understand radicalisation, how they make sense of counter-radicalisation initiatives like the UK Prevent Strategy, and how they evaluate its functioning and effects across society. Radicalisation, counter-radicalisation and Prevent demonstrates that these non-elite insights often contradict and diverge from traditional (elite) security knowledge and thus shed new light on wider questions around the politics of security. This has vitally important implications not only for counter-radicalisation and counter-terrorism policy but for the very study and practice of security.

        Design and popular entertainment

        by Christopher Breward, Christopher Frayling, Emily King, Bill Sherman

        Design and Popular Entertainment offers a selection of nine essays that examine the range of design for popular entertainment, from theatre and film, to television and radio. Investigating entertainment design from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s, the book is divided into two sections. The first addresses the 'hardware' of popular entertainment, in other words the objects through which images, sound and performance are transmitted. The second explores the construction of cinematic and televisual imagery and the design of objects for the screen, the 'software' of entertainment. In so doing it offers important insights into this little explored aspect of design. Topics covered by the collection include the design of theatrical lighting and stage sets, cinema and radio design, the representation of designers within film, and the relationship between design and television. The book's concentration on the 1950s and 1960s reflects the profound changes in modes of entertainment that took place during that period, in particular the spread of television, which not only attracted a huge popular audience but also stimulated experimental designing approaches and thinking. With particular focus on the way that both the objects and the construction of entertainment have altered audience's experience, the essays present a novel approach to the subject. This book will be of particular interest to students and teachers working in design and cultural history as well as film and theatre studies. ;
