This book explores how regional political parties use Europe to advance their territorial projects in times of rapid state restructuring. It examines the ways in which decentralization and supranational integration have encouraged regional parties to pursue their strategies across multiple territorial levels. This book constitutes the first attempt to unravel the complexities of how nationalist and statewide parties manoeuvre around the twin issues of European integration and decentralization, and exploit the shifting linkages within multi-level political systems. In a detailed comparative examination of three cases - Scotland, Bavaria and Sardinia - over a thirty-year period, the book explores how integration has altered the nature of territorial party competition and identifies the limits of Europe for territorial projects. In addressing these issues, this work moves beyond present scholarship on multi-level governance to explain the diversity of regional responses to Europe. By providing important new insights and empirical research on the conduct of territorial party politics, and an innovative model of territorial mobilization in Europe, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of comparative politics, European studies, regionalism and federalism, political parties and devolution. ;

Migrant mothers and children making lives in the shadows

Bordering social reproduction explores what happens when migrants subject to policies that seek to deny them the means of life nonetheless endeavour to make and sustain meaningful lives. Developing innovative theorisations of welfare bordering, the volume provides rich ethnographic insights into the everyday lives of destitute mothers and children who are denied mainstream welfare support in the United Kingdom due to their immigration status. This book shows how enforced destitution and debt work alongside detention and deportation as part of a tripartite of exclusionary technologies of the racial state. It advances the novel concept of weathering to comprehend mother's and children's life-making practices under duress - arguing that these are neither acts of heroic resilience nor solely symptomatic of lives rendered disposable, but indications of the fragilities of repressive migration regimes and, on occasion, refusals to accept their terms of existence.

Die Verfasserin unterzieht die derzeit im deutschsprachigen Raum vorherrschende Variante der Evolutionären Erkenntnistheorie (Konrad Lorenz, Gerhard Vollmer, Rupert Riedl) einer detaillierten Kritik, die jedoch nicht auf die Zurückweisung einer Evolutionären Erkenntnistheorie als solcher zielt, sondern dem Entwurf einer von überzogenen Ansprüchen bereinigten Version dieser Theorie dienen soll. Indem die Autorin durch Begriffsanalysen und -explikationen die terminologische Unscharfe der Evolutionären Erkenntnistheorie behebt, konsequent von den bisher nicht ausgeschöpften theoretischen Mitteln und Deutungsmöglichkeiten der Evolutionstheorie Gebrauch macht, in ihrer Skizze der »kognitiven Kompetenz« des Menschen gegenüber dem Angeborenen die biologische Relevanz der Flexibilität menschlichen Erkennens in den Vordergrund stellt und die systematische Bedeutung von Piagets genetischer Epistemologie für die Evolutionäre Erkenntnistheorie demonstriert, gelingt ihr ein überzeugendes Plädoyer für die Möglichkeit einer gemäßigten Version dieser Theorie.

Mit seiner Abstammungstheorie legte Charles Darwin den Grundstein für die Herausbildung der Biologie als Naturwissenschaft. Er schuf damit einen Rahmen, der es ermöglichte, die verschiedenen biologischen Disziplinen in einen systematischen Zusammenhang zu bringen, ihre Ergebnisse aus einer einheitlichen Perspektive neu zu deuten und weitere Forschungsfelder zu erschließen. Dieser Prozeß der theoretischen Integration verlief nicht immer reibungslos. Darwins revolutionäre Wirkung betrifft neben der Biologie auch unser Menschen- und Naturbild. Die Einbettung des Menschen in die Evolution des Lebendigen beinhaltet Herausforderungen für Ethik, Erkenntnistheorie und andere Geistes- und Humanwissenschaften. Der Sammelband gibt einen Überblick über Darwins Wirkung in diesen verschiedenen Kontexten.
