Die neue Sammlung der Gedichte Fontanes enthält zunächst die Ausgabe ›letzter Hand‹ von 1898, mit den »Liedern und Sprüchen«, mit den »Bildern und Balladen« (Nordisches, Englisch-Schottisches, Deutsches, Märkisch-Preußisches). Daran schließen sich die aus früheren Ausgaben der der Gedichte von Fontane nicht in die Ausgabe letzter Hand aufgenommenen Texte an sowie die Separatpublikationen zu Lebzeiten Fontanes und Texte aus dem Nachlaß, die in Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Sammlungen postum erschienen sind.

Nach einem längeren Auslandsaufenthalt in London lebte Fontane ab 1849 als freier Schriftsteller in Berlin und arbeitete u.a. als Theaterrezensent für die Vossische Zeitung. Er starb am 20. September 1898 in Berlin.

Erstmals wird hiermit das gesamte lyrische Schaffen des Autors im Zusammenhang vorgestellt. Heiner Müller hat an der Vorbereitung dieses Bandes noch selbst teilgenommen, Material gesichtet und geordnet. Es entspricht seinem Wunsch, daß diese Ausgabe dem Prinzip »brutaler Chronologie« folgt. Bitte beachten Sie: Der Band enthält zwei Gedichte, die nicht von Heiner Müller, sondern von Günter Kunert stammen. Es handelt sich um die Texte »Impressionen am Meer« und »Die Uhr läuft ab«. Der Fehler wird in der nächsten Auflage des Bandes korrigiert.
