Phänomenologie und Kritische Theorie sind zwei der einflussreichsten Denkströmungen der Gegenwart sowohl in der Philosophie als auch in der Soziologie. Zwischen beiden Traditionslinien besteht einerseits ein Spannungsverhältnis, das von Anfang an von Vorurteilen und Missverständnissen geprägt war. Martin Bubers sprachgewaltige Erzählungen von Engeln, Geistern und Dämonen entstanden zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts und handeln von der Welt des Ostjudentums. Dämonen und Geister wirken in die menschliche Sphäre hinein; Wunderbares geschieht in der Menschenwelt. Hinter den märchenhaften Ereignissen werden Grundzüge jüdischer Religion und Ethik sichtbar. In dieser Doppelausgabe wird ein außergewöhnliches Experiment vorgestellt: Gemeinsam mit der Fachhochschule Mainz hatte der Insel Verlag einen Wettbewerb ausgeschrieben, Martin Bubers Erzählungen zu illustrieren. Elf Studenten aus dem Fachbereich Gestaltung der Fachhochschule Mainz schufen Bilder sowie Überzugpapiere für einen Insel-Bücherei-Band. Sie alle sind dokumentiert im 25. Heft der Mitteilungen für Freunde der Insel-Bücherei. Zwei Entwürfe waren so herausragend, daß sie nun in einer Doppelausgabe veröffentlicht werden.
