Dieser Band I der Werkausgabe enthält neben allen Gedichten, die der Autor zu Lebzeiten in Büchern, Zeitschriften, Zeitungen und an entlegeneren Orten veröffentlichte, auch sämtliche 120 im persönlichen Archiv Heiner Müllers hinterlegten unveröffentlichten Gedichte. Erstmals wird hiermit das gesamte lyrische Schaffen des Autors im Zusammenhang vorgestellt. Heiner Müller hat an der Vorbereitung dieses Bandes noch selbst teilgenommen, Material gesichtet und geordnet. Es entspricht seinem Wunsch, daß diese Ausgabe dem Prinzip »brutaler Chronologie« folgt. Bitte beachten Sie: Der Band enthält zwei Gedichte, die nicht von Heiner Müller, sondern von Günter Kunert stammen. Es handelt sich um die Texte »Impressionen am Meer« und »Die Uhr läuft ab«. Der Fehler wird in der nächsten Auflage des Bandes korrigiert.

Gottesbeweise gehören zu den großen Themen der abendländischen Philosophie. Im 20. Jahrhundert sind sie mit Hilfe der modernen Logik neu formuliert worden und auch in der analytischen Philosophie werden Gottesbeweise seit Jahrzehnten kontrovers diskutiert. Offenkundig ist die Frage nach der Existenz Gottes im nachmetaphysischen Zeitalter aktueller denn je. Der Band versammelt die großen Gottesbeweise des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit ebenso wie die klassischen Einwände von Hume und Kant. Die sprachanalytische Debatte wird ausführlich dokumentiert und ein eigener Teil ist Kurt Gödel gewidmet, dessen ontologischer Beweis bis heute nicht stichhaltig widerlegt worden ist. Einleitende Essays führen in die Problematik der Gottesbeweise ein und bieten gut verständliche Rekonstruktionen der jeweiligen Beweisversuche.

Herausgegeben, im Auftrag der Klassik Stiftung Weimar, von Javier Arnaldo und Hermann Mildenberger. Die Klassik Stiftung Weimar besitzt einen einmaligen Bestand von eigenhändigen Zeichnungen Goethes – ein Schatz, der nach aufwendiger Restaurierung erstmals wieder in der Öffentlichkeit gezeigt wird: Im Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid wird von Ende Januar bis Ende April 2008 eine repräsentative Auswahl von über 70 Landschaftszeichnungen ausgestellt. Das Buch zu dieser Ausstellung enthält alle ausgestellten Bilder und erscheint parallel auf deutsch im Insel Verlag. Im historischen Teil seiner Farbenlehre kommt Goethe auch – in einer "Konfession des Verfassers" – auf sich selbst zu sprechen: "Ich war in einsamen Stunden früherer Zeit auf die Natur aufmerksam geworden, wie sie sich als Landschaft zeigt, und hatte, da ich von Kindheit auf in den Werkstätten der Maler aus und ein ging, Versuche gemacht, das, was mir in der Wirklichkeit erschien, so gut es sich schicken wollte, in ein Bild zu verwandeln; ja ich fühlte hiezu, wozu ich eigentlich keine Anlage hatte, einen weit größern Trieb als zu demjenigen, was mir von Natur leicht und bequem war." Das zeichnerische Werk Goethes steht also zumindest zeitweise mit im Zentrum von Goethes Schaffen. Essays von Javier Arnaldo, Werner Hofmann, Petra Maisak, Margarete Oppel und anderen vertiefen den Eindruck, den Goethes Landschaften hinterlassen, und stellen sie in ihren lebens- und werkgeschichtlichen Kontext.

Michel Foucault und seine Mitarbeiter sind im Zusammenhang von Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Beziehungen zwischen Psychiatrie und Strafjustiz auf den Fall Rivière gestoßen, über den 1836 eine ungewöhnlich umfangreiche Dokumentation publiziert worden war, u. a. ein Memoire Pierre Rivières über die Beweggründe zu seiner Tat: der Ermordung seiner Mutter, seiner Schwester und seines Bruders. Warum hat sich über diese Dokumentation – und insbesondere über das Memoire Pierre Rivières –, nachdem sie einmal das lebhafte Interesse der Ärzte erregt hatte, alsbald wieder absolutes Schweigen gebreitet? Die Autoren der »Anmerkungen« zu den im ersten Teil des vorliegenden Bandes abgedruckten Dokumenten analysieren einige auf den ersten Blick verdeckte Funktionen der vielfach sich überlagernden, sich kreuzenden und gegeneinander gerichteten Diskurse, die scheinbar alle von derselben Sache sprechen – einem Fall von Verwandtenmord –, gleichzeitig aber Gefechte sind. So kämpfen die Ärzte gegeneinander, gegen die Justiz und gegen Rivière; so kämpft die Justiz u. a. um die Anerkennung medizinischer Gutachten und die Zuerkennung mildernder Umstände; so sind die Zeugenaussagen von Dorfbewohnern auch Versuche, mit dem in ihrer Mitte begangenen Verbrechen fertig zu werden … Das Dossier wurde zusammengestellt, bearbeitet und mit Anmerkungen versehen im Rahmen einer Kollektivarbeit am Collège de France von: Blandine Berret-Kriegel, Gilbert Burlet-Torvic, Robert Castel, Jeanne Favret, Alexandre Fontana, Michel Foucault, Georgette Legée, Patricia Moulin, Jean-Pierre Peter, Philippe Riot, Maryvonne Saison.

Ludwig Wittgenstein wurde am 26. April 1889 als Sohn des Großindustriellen Karl Wittgenstein in Wien geboren und starb am 29. April 1951 in Cambridge. Er erhielt zunächst Privatunterricht und besuchte ab 1903 eine Realschule in Linz. Er studierte von 1906 bis 1908 Ingenieurswissenschaften an der Technischen Hochschule Charlottenburg und wechselte dann für weitere drei Jahre nach Manchester. Dort forschte er zur Aeronautik. Er begann, sich für philosophische Themen zu interessieren und trat 1912 in das Trinity College in Cambridge. Ab diesem Jahr begann Wittgenstein mit den Arbeiten an seinem ersten philosophischen Werk, der Logisch-philosophischen Abhandlung, die er in einem Tagebuch als Notizen bis 1917 festhielt. Auch während seiner Zeit als österreichischer Freiwilliger im Ersten Weltkrieg arbeitete er daran weiter, bis er das Werk schließlich im Sommer 1918 vollendete. Es erschien jedoch erst 1921 in einer fehlerhaften Version in der Zeitschrift Annalen der Naturphilosophie. 1922 wurde schließlich eine zweisprachige Ausgabe unter dem heute bekannten Titel der englischen Übersetzung veröffentlicht: Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Abgesehen von zwei kleineren philosophischen Aufsätzen und einem Wörterbuch für Volksschulen blieb die Logisch-philosophische Abhandlung das einzige zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichte Werk Wittgensteins. 1953 erschien posthum das Werk Philosophische Untersuchungen. Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe (1919–2001) war Professorin für Philosophie an der Universität Cambridge. Joachim Schulte ist Autor mehrerer Bücher über Ludwig Wittgenstein und Mitherausgeber der Kritischen Editionen von Wittgensteins Hauptwerken.

Mit Joachim Maass und insbesondere mit diesem wenige Jahre vor seiner Emigration in die USA veröffentlichten Roman ist ein großer, unbegreiflicherweise in Vergessenheit geratener deutscher Autor wiederzuentdecken (1901 in Hamburg geboren, 1972 in New York gestorben). Seine seit 1925 veröffentlichten Bücher fanden schon früh den Beifall von Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, Stefan Zweig und vieler anderer Schriftstellerkollegen. In diesem seinem dritten, 1935 von Peter Suhrkamp bei S. Fischer veröffentlichten Roman schildert Joachim Maass seine Kindheit in Hamburg und die Verwirklichungen, in die einer gerät, der die Devise zu befolgen versucht, die dem Buch als Motto vorangestellt ist: »Denken, was wahr ist; Fühlen, was schön ist; Wollen, was gut ist.«
