Erlebte Orte. Volker Michels zum 80. Geburtstag.« Die Herausgeber Silver Hesse und Karl-Josef Kuschel
A hospital somewhere in remote South Sudan. A place where peoples’ lives are marked by extreme poverty, war, violence, the climate crisis and the daily struggle for survival. How does it feel to be human under these conditions? What moves someone to voluntarily go where nobody would want to? Andreas Lutz takes you on a journey to a project run by the humanitarian aid organization Médecins Sans Frontières in the northeast of South Sudan. Impressed by encounters with people who live under the precarious conditions of this crisis zone, he writes about his experiences as a caregiver and, among other things, about how healthcare provision works with very limited resources.

Nothing is closer to us than our body and yet we are only l ittle or not at all aware of it! Our body often plays the decisive role in our life: as the basis of our existence, in the regulation of our wellbeing as well as in our behavior control. Nevertheless, we perceive it far too seldom attentively. Our body perception is a dynamic, circular, selfchanging process, because it is only through individually and collectively created ideas that we can turn body sensations into body perceptions. In this respect, our body perception is diffcult to grasp (scientifcally), since it is barely accessible via objective observation, but exists only in our subjective consciousness. In this book, body perception is therefore examined from the perspective of various disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, physiology, and history, in order to refect on its signifcance for our lives and to demonstrate its usefulness in view of the challenges of our time.
With a pinch of humor, the authors tell the story of Julia, her husband Peter, and their little whirlwind Alexander, who is starting elementary school. How do the three of them deal with this new stage in Alexander’s life? What problems do they encounter and what do they find stressful? The book sets out to help parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents understand how children of elementary school age develop. Professionals who work with children of this age may also find it of interest. Petra Jansen and Stefanie Richter are both parents and psychologists. Through the fictional Julia they share their subjective experience as mothers, while also providing background information based on scientific studies. They demonstrate in a clear and entertaining way that some of the problems experienced by children of this age are not unexpected and are no cause for despair. Target Group: Parents of children in their early years at school.
This book takes the reader on a fascinating journey, demonstrating in an understandable and entertaining way how the brain affects our thoughts, actions, and feelings - and that this sometimes only peripherally involves reason. It shows, that the subconscious actually exists and how it affects us, how we arrive at both right and wrong decisions, how our memory works, how fragile it can be, and yet also how robust. Using insightful experiments and the latest research results, including many examples, this book presents the reader what an incredibly impressive thinking organ the brain actually is – even if it is not a purely “rational machine”. Target Group: For people interested in the results of research into the workings of the brain in the areas of decision-making, memory, and consciousness.

Is it possible to tell in drawings how people with dementia experience, cope with, or fail in their everyday lives? The art therapist Albin Zauner has accomplished this feat. The picture story comprises 84 drawings and is one of the frst graphic novels on the subject of dementia. The focus is not on the medicalpathologizing view of the disease pattern or course, but on the protagonist’s inner world of experience. The existential effects, the loss of spatial and temporal orientation, the memory lapses and the breakdown of speech, permeate the old man’s world of experience in symbolic image sequences.
The decision to have their child looked after at a daycare center outside the family triggers uncertainty among many parents. They ask themselves if, how long and how often their child should be cared for at daycare and what they need to consider for a successful daycare attendance. This book is aimed at parents and other caregivers of children who are preparing for or already attending daycare. It is intended to support the entire family in strengthening the parent-child bond and make the transition to daycare easier. The book is divided into two parts: attachment and daycare entry. The attachment part highlights the concept of attachment and explains how to strengthen parental sensitivity to foster a secure child attachment. The daycare part describes the key elements of good daycare, how to prepare the child for daycare, what aspects should be considered during the settling-in, drop-off and pick-up periods as well as the cooperation with daycare staff.
