The career of Wisconsin-born Joseph Losey spanned over four decades and several countries. A self-proclaimed Marxist and veteran of the 1930s Soviet agit-prop theater, he collaborated with Bertholt Brecht before directing noir B-pictures in Hollywood. A victim of McCarthyism, he later crossed the Atlantic to direct a series of seminal British films such as "Time Without Pity," "Eve," "The Servant," and "The Go-Between," which mark him as one of the cinema's greatest baroque stylists. His British films reflect on exile and the outsider's view of a class-bound society in crisis through a style rooted in the European art house tradition of Resnais and Godard. Gardner employs recent methodologies from cultural studies and poststructural theory, exploring and clarifying the films' uneasy tension between class and gender, and their explorations of fractured temporality.

Hans Jonas verstand sich nie als »jüdischer Philosoph«, sondern fühlte sich einem universalen philosophischen Denken verpflichtet. »Daß man zusammen Philosoph und Jude ist, darin liegt eine gewisse Spannung, das ist keine Frage.« Die gerade erschienenen Erinnerungen des großen Denkers bezeugen eindringlich sein bewußtes Jude-Sein: Das Engagement für den Zionismus, die Emigration nach Palästina, der Kampf gegen Nazi-Deutschland als Soldat der Jüdischen Brigade, die Ermordung seiner Mutter in Auschwitz sind entscheidende biographische Wegmarken. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist das Verhältnis von Leben und Werk neu in den Blick zu nehmen. Auf der Grundlage von bislang größtenteils unbekannten Zeugnissen dokumentiert Christian Wiese aufschlußreiche Facetten der Jonasschen Biographie – etwa die Freundschaft sowie den Konflikt mit Gershom Scholem und Hannah Arendt. Zudem zeigt er die Einflüsse jüdischer Traditionselemente in dessen religionsgeschichtlichen und philosophischen Schriften auf. Die von Hans Jonas zeitlebens bewahrte Bindung an das Judentum ist, wie Christian Wiese hier erstmals umfassend vor Augen führt, zentral für das Verständnis seines Lebenswerks.

Hans Jonas (1903-1993) war Philosoph und wegweisender Theoretiker der internationalen Ökologiebewegung. Er floh 1933 vor den Nationalsozialisten und emigrierte, nach Stationen in Großbritannien und Israel, schießlich in die USA. Dort forschte und lehrte Jonas unter anderem an der renommierten New School for Social Research. Sein Werk wurde in 15 Sprachen übersetzt. Christian Wiese, geboren 1961, Studium der Ev. Theologie und Judaistik in Tübingen, Bonn, Jerusalem und Heidelberg, Promotion 1997 in Frankfurt a.M., Habilitation 2006 in Erfurt. 2007-2010 Professor für jüdische Geschichte und Direktor des Centre for German-Jewish Studies an der University of Sussex. Vorher Stationen als Wiss. Mitarbeiter am Salomon-Ludwig-Steinheim-Institut für deutsch-jüdische Geschichte in Duisburg und Wiss. Assistent am Lehrstuhl für Judaistik an der Universität Erfurt. Sein Forschungsgebiet ist die moderne jüdische Geschichte und Philosophie, die Geschichte des Zionismus sowie die Geschichte der jüdisch-christlichen Beziehungen der Neuzeit. Gastprofessuren in Montreal, Dublin, am Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, an der University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) und an der ETH Zürich. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was not just a world-historical event in its own right, but also struck powerful blows against racism and imperialism, and so inspired many black radicals internationally. This edited collection explores the implications of the creation of the Soviet Union and the Communist International for black and colonial liberation struggles across the African diaspora. It examines the critical intellectual influence of Marxism and Bolshevism on the current of revolutionary 'black internationalism' and analyses how 'Red October' was viewed within the contested articulations of different struggles against racism and colonialism. Challenging European-centred understandings of the Russian Revolution and the global left, The Red and the Black offers new insights on the relations between Communism, various lefts and anti-colonialisms across the Black Atlantic - including Garveyism and various other strands of Pan-Africanism. The volume makes a major and original intellectual contribution by making the relations between the Russian Revolution and the Black Atlantic central to debates on questions relating to racism, resistance and social change.

Chaim Cohn, 1911 in Lübeck geboren, wanderte 1930 nach Palästina aus. Er studierte in Jerusalem Judaistik und Jura. Seit der Staatsgründung Israels 1948 wirkte er als Generalstaatsanwalt – in der Funktion wirkte er bei der Ergreifung Eichmanns mit Fritz Bauer zusammen –, als Justizminister des Landes und von 1960 an als Richter am Obersten Gerichtshof Israels. This book outlines the ways sport helps to create transnational social fields that interconnect migrants dispersed across a region known as the Black Atlantic: England, North America and the Caribbean. Many Caribbean men's stories about their experiences migrating to Canada, settling in Toronto, finding jobs and travelling involved some contact with a cricket and social club. This book offers a unique contribution to black diaspora studies through showing sport as a means of allaying the pain of ageing in the diaspora, creating transnational social networks and marking ethnic boundaries on a local scale. The book also brings black diaspora analysis to sport research, and through a close look at what goes on before, during and after cricket matches provides insights into the dis-unities, contradictions and complexities of Afro-diasporic identity in multicultural Canada. In »Schach von Wuthenow«, zwischen 1879 und 1882 entstanden, nimmt Fontane ein für Preußen wichtiges historisches Ereignis des Jahres 1806, die Schlacht bei Jena, und ein scheinbar privates Ereignis aus dem Jahr 1815 zum Anlaß, das psychologische Porträt eines preußischen Elite-Offiziers zu liefern. In dieser Erzählung verschränken sich historisches und gesellschaftliches Erzählen. Schach von Wuthenow, aus altem preußischen Adel stammend und Offizier im Elite-Regiment Gensdarmes, begeht unmittelbar nach der Hochzeit mit Victoire von Carayon Selbstmord. Er weigert sich, aus Gründen der honnêteté, eine Scheinehe mit ihr einzugehen, zu deren Abschluß er sich durch königliches Wort gezwungen sah, nachdem bekannt geworden war, daß er ein Verhältnis mit Victoire gehabt hatte. Aus »Furcht vor dem Ridikülen«, der schöne Schach und die blatternarbige Victoire, ist er in den Tod gegangen. »So fällt denn mit Schachs Selbstmord das grelle Licht der Zeitkritik auf das Preußen zu Beginn des 19.
