        Nelson Mandela

        Little People, Big Dreams. Deutsche Ausgabe | Kinderbuch ab 4 Jahre

        by María Isabel Sánchez Vegara, Alison Hawkins, Svenja Becker

        Seine Eltern nannten ihn Rolihlahla, in Xhosa, seiner Muttersprache, hieß das Unruhestifter. Als er in die Schule kam, gab ihm die Lehrerin den englischen Namen Nelson. Aber seine rebellische Natur konnte sie ihm nicht nehmen. Ein Leben lang kämpfte er gegen die weiße Vorherrschaft in Südafrika, weshalb er fast 30 Jahre im Gefängnis saß. Nach seiner Entlassung wurde er der erste schwarze Präsident seines Landes. Für sein beispielhaftes Engagement erhielt er den Friedensnobelpreis. Little People, Big Dreams erzählt von den beeindruckenden Lebensgeschichten großer Menschen: Jede dieser Persönlichkeiten, ob Philosophin, Forscherin oder Sportler, hat Unvorstellbares erreicht. Dabei begann alles, als sie noch klein waren: mit großen Träumen.

        Lynda La Plante

        by Julia Hallam, Jonathan Bignell, Sarah Cardwell, Steven Peacock

        Lynda La Plante is Britain's most successful and well known screenwriter and the first woman to win the prestigious Dennis Potter writer's award. Attracting millions of viewers, the popular and critical success of La Plante's work is central to understanding changes that shook the UK television industry in the late twentieth century. This critical introduction, the first account of her work, focuses on three innovative serials: Widows (ITV, 1983), Prime Suspect (ITV 1991) and Trial and Retribution (ITV 1997). In each chapter questions of gender and genre, acting and stardom and authorship and value are mapped against the changing relationship between women and the television industry. The final chapter traces La Plante's metamorphosis from 'just a writer for hire' to the astute businesswoman she has become through a focus on the trans-national appeal of dramas such as Killer Net (C4 1997) and Bella Mafia (CBS 1997). ;

        The annals of St-Bertin

        Ninth-century histories, volume I

        by Janet Nelson

        The Annals of St-Bertin, covering the years 830 to 882, are the main narrative source for the Carolingian world in the ninth century. This richly-annotated translation by a leading British specialist makes these Carolingian histories accessible in English for the first time, encouraging readers to reassess and evaluate a crucially formative period of European history. Produced in the 830s in the imperial palace of Louis the Pious, The Annals of St-Bertin were continued away from the Court, first by Bishop Prudentius of Troyes, then by the great scholar-politician Archbishop Hinemar of Rheims. The authors' distinctive voices and interests give the work a personal tone rarely found in medieval annals. They also contain uniquely detailed information on Carolingian politics, especially the reign of the West Frankish king, Charles the Bald (840-877). No other source offers so much evidence on the Continental activities of the Vikings. Janet L. Nelson offers in this volume both an entrée to a crucial Carolingian source and an introduction to the historical setting of teh Annals and possible ways of reading the evidence. The Annals of St-Bertin will be valuable reading for academics, research students and undergraduates in medieval history, archaeology and medieval languages. It will also fascinate any general reader with an interest in the development of European culture and society. ;

        Goooooool!

        Brasilianer zu sein ist das Größte

        by Nelson Rodrigues, Henry Thorau, Henry Thorau

        Goooooool! brüllen brasilianische Fans, wenn ihre Mannschaft ein Tor erzielt, und Goooooool! heißt auch die Sammlung von Fußballchroniken, mit denen Nelson Rodrigues in den 1950er bis 1970er Jahren in Brasiliens Tageszeitungen für Aufsehen sorgte. Rhythmus, Esprit, Anarchie - all das, was die nördliche Hemisphäre am Sambafußball so liebt, findet sich in diesen temporeichen Kabinettstückchen auf unterhaltsamste Weise wieder. Rodrigues mischt Fakten mit Fiktion, Spielerisches mit Nationalem; es geht um Zahnlücken, Analphabetismus, krumme Beine und das "gesunde Volksempfinden". Auch wer sich nicht im mindesten für Abseitsregeln interessiert, kann sich mit Goooooool! bestens amüsieren - nicht umsonst gilt Rodrigues als Brasiliens bedeutendster Dramatiker.

        A grand strategy of peace

        Britain and the creation of the United Nations Organization, 1939-1945

        by Andrew Ehrhardt

        A grand strategy of peace is the first detailed account of Britain's role in the creation of the United Nations Organization during the Second World War. As a work of traditional diplomatic history that brings in elements of intellectual history, the book describes how British officials, diplomats, politicians, and writers - previously seen to be secondary actors to the United States in this period - thought about, planned for, and helped to establish a future international order. While in the present day, many scholars and analysts have returned to the origins of the post- 1945 international system, this book offers an exhaustive account of how the statesmen and more importantly, the officials working below the statesmen, actually conceived of and worked to establish a post-war world order.
